Ryan Moore's takeaway

He never used to swing like that when he had his run as an amateur and hsi good play last year after he turned pro. I think his regular (conventional) takeaway hurts his healing wrist because the amount that he cocks the club at the beginning of his takeaway. By cocking his wrists before the takeaway and just turning it takes that tension his normal takeaway has off of his wirst. That has to be one of the more remarkable stories of the year to get a top 10 in a major using that takeaway. It's too bad he couldn't go a little lower the first couple rounds to give Tiger a little more pressure yesterday, but then again the closer the guys get to Tiger the less birdies they make. I hope this is the start of many good finishes in majors for Ryan!

I like his game. In another thread I stated I wanted Lehman to pick him for the Ryder Cup team. He has the attitude you need. I am just not sure you can rely on that type of takeaway. There is too much timing involved. What happens on a windy day? It has to effect the plane as well as the timing. Anyway, I like the kid and like watching him play

All I can say is don't knock it till you try it.

That is one of the long standing swing drills of all time and it helps eliminate a lot of unnecessary movement in the golf swing. I've hit balls like that before and have hit them so well that I've thought about playing like that before. It forces you to have a smooth, on plane takeaway.

Pre-setting your wrists is a good way to eliminate overswinging and also helps you swing on plane....for all of you 10+ handicaps out there...give it a shot at the range and you'll see what I mean.

If you actually watched his swing this weekend, you would realize it is VERY different from his usual swing. He picks the club straight up, pauses, than rotates into his swing. It really is like a drill, only hes actually swinging like that. You need to see it to understand

I know he has used this modified swing before - but not for quite some time - It IS because of his injury that he has gone back to this take away to allow himself to play the rest of his schedule - So while Lanny maybe didn't explain it all that way, he really was right...maybe someone else didn't do all of their research...

  • 2 weeks later...

ive actually played with ryan moore in a college event in the fall of 04 @ stanford after his amateur run and let me tell you. the kid could swing left handed and still hit it pure as all get out. yes it looks goofy. but the round i played with him he beat me by 6 ( and i shot 70 ) so i can vouch largely for the guys game. i learned soo much from watching him drum me.

For all you doubters out there....like I said earlier, this is a drill I use often when my swing gets whacky and actually the only thing stopping me from playing like that was fear of ridicule....

well, thanks to Ryan, I'm swinging like him when I play now....get into a nice set up position, pre-set the wrists and just turn. It puts you into a perfect backswing position so for me it eliminates about 80% of the bad things I used to do. Anyone I play with thinks it looks goofy until I hit the ball....by the 3rd hole I've got every player in my group trying to hit like that.

It always comes down to putting but my last 5 rounds have all been mid to high 70's...at least 5 strokes better than normal.

Probably not for everyone but at least give it a shot before you laugh at Ryan. I'm sure he's laughing all the way to the bank.

I read a post on another DB that said the wrist injury is a cover up for the swing. This guy says he's an insider and said that Ryan's swing was letting him down so he went to this pre-set swing to save his golf game. He tells the wrist injury story to keep the press and everyone off his back. "Believe it, or not!"

When he "pre-sets" the wrists, does he **** the club straight up in front of him or back along the target line?

There is a drill in Faldo's swing book (A Swing For Life) where he pre-sets his wrists back along the target line and then turns.

It's a pretty neat idea. The back swing sequencing is greatly simplified, and the wrists will be fully cocked. Could aid in repeatability and increase lag. Anything could possibly increase lag I need to try. I need speed!

Glad to hear it's working for you. Honestly, who cares what other people think?

cocks club directly in front of him after measuring ball...then a simple turn of the shoulders with no wrist movement sets the club at the top perfect...I broke the same bone he did when you compress the ulna it hurts like hell at address like someone is sticking a needle in there..

Thanks for clarifying. :drinks:

A cool new thing to try but the season's over. Ah well.
