North Shore, MA reccomendations

Recommended Posts

So a few friends and I are just finishing up our intro clinic (at King Rail in Lynnfield) and we are looking for some 9 hole courses to play on North Shore. While i know there are some nice courses up here, we are looking for courses that are probabbly average at best so we wont feel like we are bringing the calsas of the place down with our putrid play, or slowing good golfers who are playing behind us down.

any suggestions? or if you play at one of the nicer places, tell us where you dont want us :D

thanks

King Rail is a nice and semi-challenging course. I've played there a few times but stay away if it rained the night before. That course doesn't dry out very quickly. You can also try Cedar Glenn in Saugus which is about 10-15 min away from King Rail due to back roads. I alos know there is a course in Woburn/Stonehman called Unicorn which is 9holes. I've never played Unicorn but I know Cedar Glenn is nice and wide. You can always go to Mt. Hood an play just 9 but the rangers there are a bit too cranky.

thanks for the quick reply. Unicorn is right next to my place of work which is a huge plus. I know where Cedar Glen is, i will definately check it out.

Unicorn isn't bad. Get's packed sometimes and play is slow. Holes are right next to each other so if you slice you will end up on the other fairway. The par 3 course Stoneham Oaks (behind Unicorn) is great for iron and short game. Usually in decent shape.

Woburn CC is nice. Wide open fairways on most holes. Pretty forgiving, good mix of longer and shorter holes. Usually in good shape.

Mt. Hood- Nice course, rangers can be *****s at times. I live down the street so I play there often. Back 9 is very hilly, I don't recommend walking the back 9...

I have never played King Rail, haven't heard good things, but might have to check it out.

Cedar Glen- Another decent course, my brother plays there A LOT. Seems to like it, usually in decent shape. (Prefer it over Unicorn)

The Meadow in Peabody is a nice track. Nice elevation changes. Really like this course.

The Middleton par 3 course is great for iron and short game practice. A little expensive for a par 3 track though IMO.

If you don't mind driving a bit Rowley CC is a nice 9 hole course, a bit more challenging. Nice dogleg holes, water in play, elevation changes.

There are so many decent courses around here. And the prices for 9 are all about the same $20-$25

Quoted for the truth! We ended up talking to the ranger after he treated us like lepers and gave him an ear full. He apologized but it doesn't make up for his crappy attitude. The only time I played there, we all walked the 18 course...good gawd what a horrible idea.

I would add Ould Newbury Golf Club into the mix. I nice challenging 9 hole course. Only $25 but whenever I invite someone with me they make my guest pay significantly less or no money at all. This is deffidently a member's course and the older members get a little cranky. The food problem is fixed so now the food is alot better.

I am going to try and update this based on my extreme beginner opinion as i play places.

Reedy Creek (formerly known as Lynnfield Center): Played this past Saturday around 2pm.

Traffic: Place was pretty empty a few groups 2 or 3 holes ahead of my threesome and two behind (who we left play through).

Cost: The course is $21 on weekends (plus $2 for a pull cart).

Course condition: the course was in rough shape. it had rained all week and the course abuts a swamp so there were puddles and wet spots on most fairway. Actually the fairways were very soft any contact with an iron left a huge skid mark. In addition, the tee boxes are turf and hard to get a pin into. The proshop is very bare. a soda machine, some snacks, and some score cards. thats about it.

Couse layout: the course is pretty straightforward with most holes parallel to each other. one par 5, five par 4s, 3 par 3s. one one or two holes water comes into play. otherwise its a good course for a beginner.

I would come back here on a regualr basis. Just not a day or two after it rains.

Unicorn Golf Course in Stoneham: Played this two Fridays ago (27th) at 11:30.

Traffic: Place was pretty busy with us wating forr the group ahead of us to tee off and someone right behind us. ALthough they wrote our name in the book i ddo not believe that they were actually managing the flow.

Cost: The course is $20 on weekdays (plus $3 for a pull cart).

Course condition: the course was in pretty good shape. the greens were a little rough though.

Couse layout: the course is a little funky with some backtracking on one or two holes. if we didnt have someopne playing with us who had been there before we would not have known where to go. I dont remember water being in play on any whole but i ended upi n the sand on a few holes. Not a bad course for beginners, but more chllanging than Reedy Meadow for sure.

RANGERS: normally i dont pay the rangers any mnd but i feel the need to point out two incidents that i saw happen. In the proshop, there was food on on side with the payment ccounter with the otther side. one of the guys i was playing wwith grabed a muffin and went to the other side to pay. I was buying a drink out of the vending machhine and was on my way out when the ranger (an older gentleman. definately past retirement age) ran at me from around the corner and was yelling at me that i needed to pay for the muffin i took. i explained to him that the guy who had the muffin was paying on the other side but he yelling at me and stormed off.

The second incident was on the golf course. I was on the 2nd or 3rd hole when i saw ranger flying across the couse on a cart. he cut a group that was behind us off and jumped out of the cart yelling about what they guys were drinking in thier cups. in full disclosure i have no idea what the guys were drinking out of their cups but it was the 1st or 2nd hole, there is no way they guys were drunk even if they were drinking. and in all honesty, you just dont approach adults and berate them like children. very unprofessional.
