I'm very interested in hearing a detailed response from those who have put the DVD's to use... especially when it comes to the tips and drills...

I have been using the drills from Hardy's book with reasonable success... I've seen a big jump in my consistency and confidence since beginning to put some of the principles into practice...

Hi Guys,

As far as a detailed description of the DVD's, someone else might be better suited for that task. With that being said, I had the Book for about 4 months and found it to be very insightful. I was and am a natural one planer that had gotten some conflicting instruction from a freind/Usga certified instructer. After studying the book and throwing out the Two plane fundamentals I improved quite a bit. However, there were still a few things that just didnt feel right even though I was following the book. NOW, for my birthday last week, I recieved the DVD set. IF anything Jim Hardy has an exceptional way of communicating his philosophy about the different swings. DUring the course of the DVD's he goes into great detail along wiht visual demonstration to actually see what he is advocating. THe DVD's i believe are roughly 3-4 hours total. THere is also a tips and drills DVD wiht it that is fantastic. ALL in all, even though I had studied the book from cover to cover, there are things you have to actually see to get a real understanding of the different fundamentals. The one plane release was something I never would have done wihtout seeing the DVD. Also, the action of the RIght arm/elbow at the beginning of the downswing was definatly hard to visualize from the book. In my opinion, I highly reccomend the DVD series if you liked the book. You will gain some valubale insights taht the book just isnt able to show. THe DVD are very well put together and are the least complicated instruction I have yet to see. Hope this helps.

You've seem him on the Golf Channel, read his book, but has anyone bought and viewed the DVD set?

I'm interested to learn if it was really that helpful and informative.

Somehow missed this in the fray of posting.

Asleep was kind enough to let me review the DVD's, and I've got to agree that they're very well done.

If you haven't heard him speak before, Mr. Hardy is incredibly eloquent and knowledgeable. Just hearing him speak gives his topics instant credibility, something few other people can claim.

The DVD is broken into four discs.

The first disc is an introduction in which he discusses who he is and where his ideas on the golf swing came from. He discusses his influences such as John Jacobs, and the difficulties he had in resolving the various pieces of advice he's recieved over the years. He then gives a brief primer on his views on the golf swing and why they should be broken down into one and two planes.

The second disc details the posture and backswing components of the one and two plane golf swing. From here on, each disc has the one plane golf swing advice first followed by the two plane golf swing. I must say that I'm guilty of fast forwarding through all the two plane parts, so I can't speak about them. So first Mr. Hardy talks about the bent over posture and the proper address that a one plane golf swinger should be in. The biggest improvement in the DVD's over the book is in the back swing, especially the initial move away from the ball which involves the moving the arms rather than the club and slight "flying right elbow" followed by a rotation of the club and completion of the shoulder turn. The whole concept of the takeaway was a little unclear in the book and is a vital part of the one plane golf swing. The DVD removes all doubt and questions.

The third disc is the downswing and is broken down by the actions of each body part: the shoulders, hips, torso, arms, and club. This is where the real benefit is. Everything is addressed here in much greater detail than the book. Some of the very elusive feelings of being "palm down" at impact, and keeping the right elbow "up and behind" are clearly illustrated here for viewers to see. This is the real key to the Hardy One Plane Swing and the thing most people I've seen struggle with. The DVD set alone is worth it just to pick up the info present on this disc.

The last disc is a "bonus" with some drills that will help achieve feelings. Some are a bit on the silly side like Jacobsen's "oven mitt drill" which helps with the one plane release. However, as mentioned above, some are vital like the "one plane release," "headcover," and "brute." Very helpful in establishing feelings you can feel in the living room while watching the DVD and then take right to the course.

My only qualms with the DVD is the price, $114 is a lot to spend, while it's worth it for big Hardy disciples, you're still paying for information which is useless since there is a strict dichotomy between the one and two plane golf swing principles. I'd rather have seen the DVD broken into two $50 DVD's one with just one plane info and the other with just two plane info. Read the book to know which one is right for you and then pick up the corresponding DVD. Just a little nitpicking there.

All in all, I'd say it's a much better version than the book. If you're a strict Hardy student, it's a must have. If you're very interested in Mr. Hardy's ideas I'd strongly suggest picking up the DVD over the book, it's just so much more clear and concise.

Hope that helps.

Wow. Taylormadefan,

That's a tremendous review. One question though, I've been working on a 1PS for the better part of 1 1/2 years and well, I finally feel like I got it---not only on the range, but also on the course. Which for me was the biggest challenge...

So my question is: At this point am I running a risk of messing myself up by getting the DVD's or should I wait until it feels 'broken' again and use the DVD's to fix it?

I welcome all opinions..

Certain people in this world are blessed with the ability to internalize information without having it affect them at all. Others just hear a swing thought and are immediately crossed up. Yet others fall somewhere inbetween. I'm not sure which category you're in, but obviously that's going to play a huge role.

Honestly, if you're swinging the club really well now, I'd keep going and wait till you fall in a rut.

Much like you I'm a year into a 1PS transition. I've got the backswing down, and now the downsiwng is beginning to come together piece by piece. First my shoulders, then my hips, and now the arms and club are beginning to fall in line, under the eye of my instructor of course. I know that when I feel I'm swinging my best I've definately got that "palm down" feeling, and I'm starting to get some feelings for WHY I'm getting there.

Good luck!

I'm glad it's coming together for you! I've struggled on my own for all this time. There simply isn't anyone near me who's well enough versed in Jim Hardy's philosophy. In Ben Hogan fashion, I've dug it out of the dirt and let my ballflight be my tutor.

Probably not the most productive way to do it, but I'm mentally stronger for it and I can 'fix it' pretty quick when it goes wrong on the course. Did that sound convincing? Because there were times I would have boarded an airplane and flow to a qualified instructor!

Can get alot of help, sometimes from J.Hardy himself, on his website jimhardygolf.com, and oneplanegolf.com, and i also got alot of hardcopy from Hardy diciples off of 4gea.com, especially user name of dochox, who attented several of Hardys seminars etc.....

dvd are very good, the Golf Channel Video Vault subscription is worth the 1 yr price just for the number of Jim Hardy and Stan Utley avail

Mr. Hardy's forums are great, there's tons of fantastic advice on there not just from Mr. Hardy, but also great teachers like Carol Mann, and knowledgeable participants like our own Jeffy. There are lots of great posts in the FAQ / Greatest Posts section which help relate feelings and some of the more difficult problems people encounter when trying to adopt the 1 and 2PS.

As far as one planegolfswing.com, I'd be very careful about that. I'll let Jeffy explain further, but I don't think Chuck Quintont and Mr. Hardy are exactly on the same plane when it comes to the golf swing. . . . :idhitit:

I've visited and registered at jimhardygolf.com. It's a fantastic resource, with some incredibly knowledgable (and distinguished) particpants. It's been a great help to me. But I'm very visual person/learner and some concepts/physical descriptions are easier to see than read.

As far as Chuck Quintont is concerned, I'm a little familiar with him but more familiar with his 'association' with Mr. Hardy...

As far as Quinton goes, setting aside his questionable ethics, what he teaches is quite different from Hardy's one-plane swing. Quinton's has many two-plane elements: more erect posture, wider takeaway, "passive" arms. I personally think "passive" arms is just code for "synchronized" arms (i.e., synchronized with the body's rotation). Obviously, arms that are truly passive will not square the clubface or add any power. "Synchronized" arms, essential for a two-plane swing, may "feel" passive; hence Quinton's advocacy of "passive" arms. In contrast, Hardy's one-plane swing relies on very active arms, whipping around the body.

Hardy's one-plane release requires a bent-over posture and "one-plane" arms and shoulders; otherwise the player will come-over-the-top every time. Quinton's approach can work with either one or two-plane arms and shoulders. IMO, Quinton's one-planeness is strictly marketing driven. His method does not really benefit from a "one-plane" top of the backswing position.
