Is Torrey Pines worth it?

I live in LA, belong to a nice club, but need to get out of the city for a few long weekends...been stuck here and need to explore Cali a little (from NYC, been here for 3 years).

Thinking of going to Torrey Pines finally, is it worth it? I will pay whatever for a nice weekend anywhere, but will lose my mind if the course is in bad shape. I hear horror stories about the condition there. Something to worry about or is it in good shape?

Also, if reading this, any suggestions of places would be so helpful. I have only been to Pelican Hill, really nice, but not much of an escape from LA, Palm Springs is too hot right now, Santa Barbara? Pebble Beach?

Play during their afternoon rates and its a much better value.
If I had to pay full price I wouldn't even get near the place.

I played Torrey today and we teed off at 230. If you play after 3 the rates are a lot cheaper. I played today to get a real test to see how my game really is and it was a real test. Torrey just had the junior world championship and the rough was long. The greens were in decent shape but due to the amount of play they had on them today there were ball marks everywhere. IMO if your going to treat yourself to Torrey be the first one there in the morning (during the week), eat at the lodge, and after head down the road and check out the scenery.

I payed about $300 to play south course early in the morning. Is it an awesome course? Most def. Is it worth $300? Hell no. Residents are paying $60 to play there which is a bargain.

If you want to escape and have the mesns to do so, play pebble and spyglass.

just got back from torrey this evening after playing the south course this morning. First off I just want to say that people go into Torrey with extremely high expectations. Torrey Pines is a municipal golf course which is exactly what you get. It also happens to be one of the nicest municipal golf courses in the country with some great history and tradition. If you love golf and you follow it regularly you have to play it sometime in your life. When I was walking the course I couldn't help but think about Tiger on sunday and Tiger and Rocco on monday playing the exact course that I was playing. The South is a very tough course so bring your A game even if you are playing from the whites. I played with two locals and they said that the North is more fun and more scenic and at about $80 cheaper and usually less crowded than the South, it makes a great alternative if you can't afford the South course greens fees.

Played the South Course earlier this summer for the first time at twilight (after 3PM) for $110 walking. The conditions are NOT immaculate...it is a municiple course, but it is still beautiful and very enjoyable to play. I wouldn't pay $110 to play it all the time, but it was definitely worth the cost to play it at least once to experience it.
