VS PROTO BORE THROUGH

HELP.....

Just spent 800 dollars on the new VS PROTO, I have heard that aldila recommends 1.5 and no more then 1.75 bore through with the shaft and that a full bore through makes the shaft play extra stiff???? im new to golf, what does this mean and how do i know if the guy at golf galaxy did that!!!! I spent the money for premium shaft and want the premium results???? all this lingo is confusing for me, bore through???? any help would be awesome

A clubhead's bore is the distance the shaft inserts into the head.

 

Certain heads like Titleist and most Callaway's have the shaft going all the way through, which is called a "bore through" head. A shaft installed into a Titleist head is inserted 4" into the clubhead. As you know, this makes the shaft paly stiffer in the tip since the tip section is physically "restricted" by the clubhead. Usually shafts used in bore through heads have longer "parallel tip sections" to accomodate the stiffness the bore through adds.

 

Clubheads like Callaway's FT-3 are what's called a blind bore, where the shaft inserts into the clubhead a certain distance but not all the way through the clubhead. Plays stiff, but not as stiff as a bore through.

 

Clubheads like TaylorMade have a shallow bore, where the shaft only inserts a short distnance (usually about 1.5").

 

A shaft like the VS proto can be installed into a bore through head without playing too stiff by inserting a "filler" into the bore to take up the space the shaft would normally reside in. That way the shaft plays "true to flex" without any problems with installation.

 

You really need to know and trust your clubmaker to make sure they've done it correctly. What clubhead was the shaft installed in? If it's in a bore through and you're unsure about the insertion depth, you can take some measurements from the graphics to the hosel and some members who are playing the shaft can likely help you.
