GRIPS - Ribbed or Round?

i was always wondering, ribbed or round grips?

 

i have gone back and forth many times.

 

i know that the round grip has gained a lot of popularity because of Tiger and is upside-down Tour Velvet Cord.

 

but, is a ribbed grip more advantagous? in theroy, it keeps a constant reminder of what square is.

 

then, i thought, maybe pros do use ribbed ones, but turn it for endorsement reasons.

 

round feels good at times, but ribbed does seem to be a little cheating.

 

anyone, your 2 cents would be greatly apprecaited.

I can't stand ribbed grips. I picked up a set of forged cb's that came with ribbed grips and I just can't wait to strip them off and replace with some decades.

 

As for their popularity following from what the tour players use, I think that's a stretch. I think most players play what comes on their clubs with the exception of players that prefer a specialty grip such as the decade which comes standard on very few clubs to my knowledge.

 

I think it comes down to a simple matter of personal preference, but in my 10+ years in golf, I haven't met too many people that like the ribbed grips. I think they were a bit of a fad in the TM Super Steel era but have generally fallen out of favor for the vast majority of players.

I'm kinda wondering the same thing. I haven't played ribbed grips in a looonnnggg time, but whenever I grab a new Callaway in the pro shop, the seem to have a rib....and it feels good.

i think the older grips, like the Golf Pride Victoy were ribbed.

 

 

 

as for OEM's using round grips, i think it'll just make production easier.

 

they wouldn't have to hire someone to try and put on the grips "correctly".

 

if its round, streamline, slip them on.....

Ribbed is what i started with,ribbed is what used to be the most popular "after-market" grip available here in the UK (round was barely available) and probably hence im still a dedicated ribbed man :cheesy:.I find it very hard to really square the face at address with a round grip compared to a ribbed,and i'l take all the help i can get.

 

I have for the last few years been using round on my SW + LW though,so it feels a little less strange for those open clubface shots.

I haven't used anything but round. To me the simpler the better. I use tour velvet with the label down.

Got to say 100% round. There is nothing worse than putting on the first grip logo down & figuring out that the other 12 you have are ribbed too.

It is total preference. Personally, I am a ribbed guy, 100% of the way...have been for 35+ years

 

-for me, it just feels better and I feel the club in my fingers, not palms, which helps promote a correct grip.

 

Ribbed are alive and well...most all manufacturers carry both styles. Just as important, make sure that the size .58 is right for you, or .60. (Also depends on your shaft butt diameter....58 grips put on .58 butt = standard.....60 put on .60 butt.)

 

In the 1960's and 70's (and before) the ribbed was called the "reminder" grip. Some leather grips had a ridge built in the back...same effect.

 

I'd suggest you try both and go with the one that feels best for you.

PS, some people like to move their hands around for hooks and fades -- not a good idea anyway -- and they prefer round as the rib causes them trouble when they move their hands strong or weak.

Personal preference...

 

I hate the feeling of the ribbed. I had never felt a ribbed grip until shoppin around for new clubs this year. Good thing about customizing clubs now is that you can pick what ever you want and a lot of the grips come in both ribbed and round.

Ribbed except for wedges. It lets me know what square is. im always opening up wedges so i figured round would be ok and it has worked for me.
