Visiting Indy from Texas in early November

Any golf ideas?

So the first week of November I will be in Indy and Chicago, and I am wondering if there will be any type of ideal golf weather. I am scoping out a potential move from Central Texas to somewhere between Indy and Chicago. I know the weather should probably be partly crappy when I'm there, but is it golfable? If so, any courses that won't cost me an arm and a leg to play while I'm there? I want to play the Brickyard course, but can wait until next spring to do so.

The golf weather should be just fine in Indy with highs in the mid 50s (which I understand is pretty cold coming from Texas!), Chicago less so. There should be plenty of affordable golf that time of year as courses should be on off season rates. Brickyard could be good, and I recommend the Fort. But, really I'd say look around and see who has a good off season rate and go there, there's plenty of good, but affordable public courses around Indy.

Be sure to ask the course you decide to play if they have aerated recently. Mid/late October is about that time in Indy and not all courses are good at telling you about it.

I was stationed in Great Mistakes for a while, cold weather doesn't really bother me. All kinds of good information here, keep the ideas coming.

As a relatively new golfer <2 years, what does aerating a course actually have to do with the play of the course? I see "aeration" here in central Texas all the time, but I have yet to see it actually affect the play of a course, but then again, it hasn't rained here in a year...

It just means that the greens will be slow and bumpy. How bad really depends on a number of factors including how recently it was done. For the most part, I don't mind playing on aerated greens, so I wouldn't worry too much. But, if you pay top dollar to play some place and the greens are slow and bumpy, it's a real downer. And I agree it's a bit questionable not to mention that the greens have been aerated or to lower the price.

I would definitely play the Kampen course at Purdue on your way. Good track in great shape. It came throught the brutal summer here very well. Trophy club is another good course in good shape you can play this on the way to Indy from Chicago as well. The Fort on east side of Indy is another course that is good track in good shape. Avoid Prairie View in Carmel as they had some serious issues with their greens this summer. Hope for good weather and enjoy.
