Long shaft issue, choking down

I have a TM Burner Driver, 2009. I have the regular flex REAX shaft (49g) in it at the stock 46.25” (I think) length.

I am beginning to notice, as I get better hopefully, that it’s a bit on the long side and when choking down on the grip I do get more control. However that leaves me gripping a narrow part of the grip and sometimes too easy to play hooks.

My question is should I consider getting it cut down an inch or more? What happens if I do, and from which end?

Or…should I just have the grip replaced and made thicker, lower under the right hand How much thicker?

I am wary of chopping it and altering the feel of the club which does work well when I swing it right when choking down - Its just that some times I hook all the time when choking down....or are there other factors generally that I need to consider?

There's a reason that the average driver length on the PGA is under 45". It's all about hitting fairways... most of the time. You'll find that cutting down the shaft will most likely give you better control and maybe even more distance because you'll probably hit the ball better. There are some things you'll need to be aware of, however. Swing weight being one of them. When you trim, either from the butt or tip, it will lower swing weight and will affect your sense of where the head is. There are a number of ways to remedy this, from lead tape on the head (sole) to simply changing to a lighter grip. Or you can just get a heavier shaft and play at a shorter length.

If you like the shaft, but feel like you're starting to overpower it as you get better (often leading to a hook), you may want to trim a little from the tip. Start with a half inch and go from there. It'll make it play a little firmer. Butt trimming may make the shaft a hair firmer, but not nearly as much as taking length from the tip.

OR you can simply re-grip and put a few extra wraps under your right hand (assuming right handed). That'll eliminate some of the taper of the grip and it won't be as thin by the bottom.

I'm not sure that i'm overpowering the shaft yet, but will consider trimming up to 1 inch perhaps, that's about as much as I effectively choke down, keeping in mind the weight issues, i like that at the moment I can feel the head just enough through the swing.

Maybe my first adjustment though will be to add to the grip, cheaper and reverseable!

Going to hold off making adjustments for now.

 

I played for the first time in a few weeks, windy day and didn't choke down on the grip, performed fine so long as I worked on smooth controlled swing. Just got to work on doing that every time I play and not try to smash at the ball.

 

Though I am sure pretty soon I'll think again that trimming the shaft is the only way forward though

I have an 09 burner and had it cut down to play 44.25", it has the stock stiff shaft in it. I will tell you this thing is a beast, i can draw it fade it cut it low rockets...i love it. Since cutting it down my fwy hits have gone up from around 30ish% to exacty 67% and my misses are literally a couple feet off the fwy. Trust me cut it down!
