What's the weirdest local rule you've encountered????

There is one course that I play a tournament at and they made it a local rule where if your ball hits the power line, you still have to play it from where it ends up.

 

A friend of mine hit the power line and it kicked it in the hazard and he had to play it from the hazard, or had to take a drop from the hazard.

A local course I play has power lines pretty close to the tee box and I happen to hit high enough I've hit them at least 3 or 4 times. Are you saying you're supposed to get a free replay?

By far the funniest one I've seen is on a course in Indiana where on the last hole, there was a sign telling players to put their shirts back on.

 

I've read about a course in Yellowknife, Canada, where there are rules covering balls stolen by the resident thieving ravens. At a course near Tampa, I remember a rule stating that if your ball went into the nest of one of these burrowing owls living on the course you weren't allowed to try to get it back (free drop).

Q. An overhead power line is so situated that it interferes with the play of a hole. Would it be appropriate for the Committee to make a Local Rule allowing a player whose ball is deflected by this power line the option to replay the stroke, without penalty, if he wishes?

 

A. No. However, a Local Rule requiring a player to replay the stroke would be acceptable. The following text is suggested:

“If a ball strikes the power line during play of the ____ hole, the stroke is canceled and the player must play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was played in accordance with Rule 20-5 (Making Next Stroke from Where Previous Stroke Made).â€

In some cases the Committee may wish to include in the Local Rule the towers or poles supporting such lines when the towers or poles are positioned such that they interfere with the play of the hole. (Revised)

My local club here in Switzerland, where land is scarse and expensive, is built over a reclaimed quarry. Conveyor belts still run across the fairways of 4 of the 9 holes. They will eventually finish quarrying the whole site and build the remaining 9 holes. Meanwhile, on weekdays, the conveyors set down in 4 yard deep/25 yard wide trenches are carrying rock etc across those fairways! For the ladies who tend to play a more running ball game, its very tough.

 

Originally they were designated out of bounds and the head-pro had a running argument with the management. Eventually he wrote to the R&A who agreed that this was not OK. They are now designated water hazards, but from which you have to take a drop and you are (in theory) not allowed to go get the ball.

 

On the same course they have some "bio-topes" which are sort of mini nature reserves. Also designated water hazards, and you arent allowed to step in them either. My wife and I call them the "bio-hazards" much to the bemusement of the natives.

 

Needless to say you can lose a fair few balls (I think my record was about 12 for nine holes when I started out) and I have played with single digit HCPs who have lost 3 or 4 on a bad day.

Played in a High school event and before we tee'd off, the head pro announced "failure to replace divots is a 2 stroke penalty".
