Just as it says, what's year long golf like in Oregon? Looking at moving to the Portland or philomath area.

for the Portland area ,

Buy a higher lofted driver, Gore-Tex is your friend, have several pairs of golf shoes ( summer and winter), craft beers and the Timbers rule!

Its not so bad, just wet in the winter. The summers are great and there are several Wrx'ers from PDX on the site to play with. Portlandia is a great town.

cheers, spin

Is it a steady rain, sprinkling or what? I'm really interested in the details, it may influence me to move to the southern part of Oregon or northern ca. I'm sick of the winters here in Minnesota, thankfully so is my wife.

The Portland mist can be like Chinese water torture. It does seem like it goes on for months on end. I am a SoCal transplant and have been here for 17 years now and have gotten used to the mist. Summertime golf here is the best in the country IMHO. Winter golf is "playable" as long as you have the right gear. Most of the older courses have very poor drainage and you practically need galoshes to get around (Nike Bandon golf shoes are a good purchase).

About the only thing that stops golf is the freezing rain which has become more frequent in the last 5 years or so.

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)
Odyssey ProType 9 putter

I'm not sure what this "mist" is and I've lived here for over 10 years. When it rains, it just rains. Like Seattle-rains. When it's not raining during Fall/Spring, it's cloudy, or sprinkling with the random sunny day. The summers can be hot (like this summer late July - Sept) but overall, it's just miserable weather if you're used to a place like California, or the Southwest. Golf year-round isn't difficult though, because unlike where you're from, we don't snow out. It's wet probably 6 months out of the year and you'll plug until late May on some courses...and all of the public courses back up to 4+ hour rounds at best.

Philomath? Really? That's the middle of nowhere and Corvallis at best. If you have to move to Oregon (which I would NEVER recommend), I'd suggest the Portland area because minus the weather, it's got everything you want out of a decent-sized metro. Corvallis has very little of that. Eugene, the same. Farther south even worse.

And no, I'm not trying to dissuade you. Just giving you an opinion from someone that's been in the area for over a decade.

Yes, you can play year round here in the Portland/Salem area, but be prepared to suffer a little :black eye: !
The good thing is that you can play comfortably through Thanksgiving most years. The bad thing is that we've had some fairly wet Springs for the last few years that have dragged on and on (into early June). The summers through late fall have been very dry the last few years.

Most important thing is the gear. Forget riding unless it has been dry for a while. You are going to want a pushcart with an umbrella attachment. Always keep a large umbrella in your car/with your pushcart. Nothing worse than trying to carry through mud and rain or walking 50 yards to your ball in the middle of the fairway when it is cart paths only. Then invest in either the Nike Bandons or Adidas Mudskippers (my preference if you can find them). After that, go ahead and get 2 pair of quality rainsuits that breath fairly well (1 when you know it's going to be pretty muddy and 1 for moderate conditions). I've nearly sweat to death under a crappy rainsuit when it was raining and 70+ degrees.

If you don't want the to be in the big city of Portland, Salem is actually a very central location if you want to get to the best courses in Oregon. It is a fairly quick trip from there over to the Bend/Redmond/Sisters/Sunriver (central Oregon) area which has a tremendous amount of quality courses (15+). About the same distance heading west is the mecca of Bandon as well. Bandon's winters are very mild and you can get better overall conditions there in December-February than in the summers at a fraction of the price. 45*-60* with less wind (some mild rain) vs. 60*-75* with a ton of wind at times with some rain.

Personally, I'd rather play in dry 90*+ conditions in Arizona than 35* and raining in Oregon, but if you really love golf you can make both work as long as the courses are open!!! :cheesy:
