Hogan Precision Driver, original finish?

Went to the big city to have a filling replaced. Afterwards, dropped by one of my favorite thrift stores, found some great sticks @$1/ea:

 

BH Precision Driver, persimmon, 44" stiff (no label); BH Speed-Slot-108, Dura-?, 43 1/2", Apex 4,laminate; '73 Apex model, 4 & 5 irons, Apex 4s; BH Bounce +1 Equalizer, Apex 3; (vintage) BH Sure Out, rough shape & very rusty.

 

My question for you guys is: what was the original, factory, finish on the Hogan Precision Driver? The one I picked up has a black finish, does have the orignal insert (based on aging (faded) and seperation from the head). No visible cracks in the neck. It is possible that the shaft is a replacement and the whipping appears to be synthetic or plastic coated thread. (Wasn't the original some kind of cotton or linen for woods of mid-to-late 50s vintage?)

 

And while I have your attention: The Speed-Slot-108 (Ser. no. J7523), which has 3 vertical, hair-line cracks in the neck (whipping is off), the no. 1 on the sole, appears to have dark green paint fill, and the wood has what appears to be as its original finish, that deep brown, almost dark chocolate finish that was used on some of the BH persimmons of the 70's era. Was this finish also used on laminates at this time? I thought most of the laminates had a black or ebony finish.

The Precision's had 2 finishes, black like the one pictured, it might be original finish, it still has the red trim above the whipping and correct decal, it might have been just rewhipped as that was standard practice if the whipping became loose.
the other finish was like the Macgregor Red/ eggplant or burgundy

Hogan used different finishes, on the laminates, Red, brown and black

Thanks teevons. Will be removing and reseating the insert and soleplate before refinishing. After the original posting, I did a search and reviewed the discussions of Precision Experimental woods that included comments and pictures from you and others, and TDL's refinished Precision Driver. Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing.
