UPDATE Today's Project: Refinish and Torch 2 Scotty's

Added pics of todays Studio Select Squareback torch

Well folks, recently bought a couple of putters here in the BST, and todays project was to refinish a putter.

Putter: Scotty Cameron Laguna 1.5 AOP
Condition: Rust, pitting, nicks and dings. Overall, poor
Finish: Seemed to be a rusted oil can, not sure.

Supplies:

Sand Paper: 60, 120, 240, 400, 600 grit
Steel Wool: 00, 0, 1
Propane torch industrial strength, super high heat
Baby Oil
Vice
Naval Jelly

I wish i had taken before pics, but i didn't think of it.

I started with 60 grit sand paper and did a really really thorough sanding job, making sure to eliminate any and all pitting and nicks.
I cleaned the head, stuck it in some naval jelly, then washed again.
I repeated with 60 grit, which basically landed me a rough, but clean looking head.
I then worked my way from 120 grit up to 600 grit sandpaper.
After using the 600 grit, i washed again.
Started with the coarsest wool, i worked my way to the finest, smoothing out the surface and making it very shiny (The more shine and higher heat you use, the darker the coloring will appear)
I wanted to give it an old school look since the milled was so poorly visible, so i made sure to take it down to the point where it is a smooth face.
Then I started on it with the torch. I knew I wanted it dark, and i wanted the neck and heel to have a bit of contrast, and the results are:

it didn't turn out perfect. There are some spots i should have hit just a bit more when sanding. And i could have hit the toe just a tad more with the torch. All in all the color turned out really dark and has a great purple/blue look to it.

This second one came out a lot better. pictures don't do it justice. I wish i would have removed the nick, but i didn't want to mess with the milling on the face. got a lot of gold, blue and a purple...
