Ping Eye 2, Eye 2+, and i5

I have seen a lot of eye 2 irons in tour bags. Does anyone know if these are eye2's or eye 2+'s and what is the difference between these two? Does anyone have feedback on the i5 irons?

ping eye 2 had a diff sole than the eye 2+.

 

the + had conforming groove spacing.

 

the + was supposed to be more forgiving.

 

the shafts were diff. as well as the lofts.

Stock answer is the Eye 2+ has a "+" logo in the cavity, the Eye 2 doesn't. Unless it's an Eye 2 "+ no '+'" but we'll not go into that...!

 

Seriously, the Eye 2 had a squarer face profile, ad a chunkier sole design. The Eye 2+, which generally does bear a little "+" logo on the toe-end of the cavity is a rounded face profile iron, with a skimmed sole design - the back edge is more "scalloped" with an angled back edge which is also somewhat concave if you look down on it.

 

The Eye 2+ was introduced round the turn of the 90s and featured legal grooves and, as Ping describe it "improved" perimeter weighting. The lofts are also different on on the +'s, being stronger.

 

I've got a set of both lying around, both in beryllium copper. Both are very solid irons, the main difference being the difference in loft, wedges in particular (Eye 2 SW is 57 standard, LW 61; The Eye 2+ are a 53 SW and a 57LW) andthe sole designs meaning that the Eye 2+ opens up easier. At least I think so. Confusingly, the main usage of Eye 2 wedges on tour tend to be the original Eye 2s, Sluman, Andrade and Purdy being the main exponents. Calc also is an Eye 2 fan, and has been for years. Until recently, chris DiMarco was also an Eye 2 wedge man. Azinger has played an Eye 2 SW and PW since 1987. Eye 2+ wise, Tim Herron still uses the newer version.

 

Also, the shafts were different. My Eye 2s have a ZZZ shaft - roughly equivalent to a TT DG X100. My Eye 2+ set are fitted with the original KTMs which play much softer. EYe 2s generally are to be found for sale with a ZZ shaft. The Eye 2+s tend to be fittet with a JZ or a KT or KTM shaft which play differently.

 

Can't help you with the I5s. Only tried them once and didn't like them, although they are claimed to be a sucessor to the Eye 2s, they play and feel differently to me.

 

All great clubs, and still a viable option today, over 20 years later, in the case of the Eye 2s.
