Returning NEO Golfer

Tips would be appreciated

Hey there guys,

I've been a golfer since I was young (learned golf over at Challenge Golf in Lakemore on their three hole par three course, great course to learn on) but have recently returned to the game now that college is over and done with.

I have a couple guys that I golf with, and we always play Lake View over in Hartville. While it's fun to play that course regularly, I was looking for courses I could suggest to my buddies so we could expand our horizon. I know we are already planning a trip to The Sanctuary, but any suggestions would be appreciated. I realize that is probably like shooting fish in a barrel around here (tons of great courses to play in NEO), but places that are good learning courses or intermediate courses would be great.

On the flip side, I recently signed up for private lessons to work on my swing. I want to get rid of my Dunlop box set I got probably, oh, 10 years ago and move up to something with a bit more brand equity (and forgiveness, really, haha). Do you guys suggest taking lessons for a while and then getting new clubs, or include picking new clubs in the lesson process so that I can fix my swing and adjust to the new clubs?

One last question...do you guys think playing in a league would help my game (I am guessing more consistent play leads to more consistent shots)? I don't have a handicap figured since I only really started playing a lot again recently, so I was curious if something like a league would help?

Welcome to the forums! It's great to have another NE Ohio golfer on the board!

You'll have a great time at The Sanctuary. I live about 5 or 10 minutes away and play it at least 10 times a year. It's always in great condition and it's a really fun course and I really like the layout. My home course is The Fairways. I live less than two minutes away. It's off of Everhard. Not too far from Belden Village Mall. Decent course. Nothing special. Some of my favorites in the area are Sable Creek and Seven Hills. Both are really close to Lake View. Mayfair CC is pretty nice, Raintree CC is nice, The Legends of Massillon is a solid 27 hole course, and Tam O'Shanter is a good 36 hole facility.

And, can't leave out The Quarry. Definitely the best course in the Akron/Canton area(or so I've heard). It's the #4 public course in Ohio. I've never played it, but we're having a GolfWRX Outing at The Quarry this summer so that will be my first time. Three have canceled. We've got six tee times(24 spots) so if you sign up, you'd be the 26th. I'm sure you'll get a spot though because I'm sure we'll have at least 3 or 4 more who won't end up being able to make it. The outing is going to be Saturday, June 23rd with tee times starting at 10:30am. Should be a great time if you're interested!

If you ever want to tee it up sometime, just shoot me a PM or something. I'm always up for a round of golf, but I won't be available much until late May when baseball is over.

Thanks for the offers man...I might take you up on a round sometime, and I might jump in on the Quarry if I feel my game is up to snuff. Rather not embarrass myself in front of everybody, haha.

Any club suggestions? I'm split between a couple drivers and irons, but haven't really gotten a chance to hit any of them yet.

Also any thoughts on joining a league?

I play to an 11.1 Handicap Index and usually shoot in the low-mid/high 80's so I won't be shooting par or anything, lol. I usually play a couple shots under bogey golf.

I've got the Callaway X-20 irons and absolutely love them. They are a few years old but I just got them at the end of last season and so far I have fallen in love with them. I got them for $300 brand new. As far as drivers go, I can't really help you much. It's the last thing I need to complete my bag so I'm about to start looking into getting a new one.

About the league, I would definitely say go for it. I've looked at a couple of leagues in the area but I can't really commit to one yet since I don't know what job I'm going to be getting this summer so I'm not sure how my work schedule will be.
