Tri State Area, KY, OH and WV

I am a college student who will be working in a summer internship in North Eastern KY near the boarders of OH and WV. I am hoping golfwrx could help me out with some golfing info for the area. Any must play courses? Good public courses? Any private courses who may be willing to consider me for a short term membership? What are the best driving ranges and golf stores in the area? Any other info that you think I may find useful would also be appreciated.<br class="Apple-interchange-newline">

Best courses in the Huntington, WV area are the Riviera Country Club and the Sugarwood Golf Club. Hidden Cove Golf Course in Olive Hill was rated as a top 10 hidden gem by Golf Digest a few years back, but I regrettably haven't played it. :X

As far as golf stores, good luck depending on where you're located. The only thing in the Huntington area is Dick's Sporting Goods! :fie:

I played riviera and sugarwood, both pretty good courses thanks for the advice. Personally I perfered sugarwood but will play riviera again for sure. I plan on getting out to hidden cove soon. Thanks for the tips

There is a nice course in Ashland, KY named Sandy Creek. I have played it twice in the past couple of weeks, although the last time it was burnt up due to the weather we've been having. Green fees are cheap, $16 to walk 18 on weekdays and $18 on the weekends and your walking green fees are good for the entire day. Have you found any other courses in the area you enjoyed? I've also been out to Esquire recently, but that's not my favorite track.

I've played sandy creek its a decent course with great prices, short though. I have also played esquire once and do not plan on going back, to many houses and just overall blah.

I have also played twin silos right near sugarwood, its ok, kind of tricked up. I still have to get out to hidden cove, I think I am also going to make a trip to play old silo at some point.

Old Silo is very nice. On the way to old Silo is Eagle Trace in Moorehead KY, it is about 50 mins from Huntington. I wouldn't drive past Hidden Cove in Grayson though. Also, check out the two courses in Portsmouth, the Elks which is a Donald Ross and Shawnee which is a state park course. Both of those are fun and good tracks, better than the rest in the area with the exception of Hidden Cove.

[/quote] Even worse in previous years. They put in the Bermuda grass a few years back and it's really killed the course since it's not made to thrive in WV/OH/KY weather. Old Silo is a nice little haul from the Huntington area (hour and a half, give or take).

[/quote] Are there any other Ohio courses that are closer to Huntington, say 30 minutes or less? There used to be a par 3 course in Chesapeake, but it closed sometime in the early 2000's I believe. I haven't heard of any other courses closeby in Ohio since then.

I played hidden cove at grayson lake on monday. Great layout, but the conditions were pretty disapointing, bunkers apprently dont drain well as we havent had much rain and they were still soaked, and muddy. Fairways were pretty beat up as well. Most of the greens were pretty good, but nothing special. It was a good price though as I only payed $29.75 for the twlight rate of 18 with a cart.

If you still in the area, most of the courses around here have had a difficult season weather wise. Most of the course have already been mentioned, but the best tracks in the area Sugarwood, Hidden Cove, and Stonecrest. Eagle Ridge in Louisa has been beaten up quite a bit with rain and high heat. It really ate up their fairways. The Elks greens are still in decent condition, but the course has never been the same since it went public. Old Silo in Mount Sterling is a nice layout, but say way from the bunkers. There is no sand in them. Eagle Trace in Morehead is pretty good as long as there isn't much rain, they seem to have a problem with drainage. If your willing to travel a bit there are some nice tracks Twisted Gun in Gilbert, Brier Patch in Beckley, Stonehaven course at Glade Springs in Daniels, and Stonewall Resort.

Driving range wise, Chesapeake driving range is about the best you can get. There is one in Proctorville that is rarely open and one in Barboursville at Orchard Hills. Stores wise, you got Dick's Sporting Goods and Sugarwood.
