Toughest Course/Conditions You've Ever Played In

A few weeks ago I agreed to play in a team tournament. Teed off in pouring rain and 20 mph wind off the cold ocean and temp about 50. I played well for the first 6 holes. Then we ran out of dry towels. By the 12th hole my hands were prunes and could not hold onto the club. As play went on the wind increased and the temp dropped. By the end the temp was about 45 and the wind sustained at 35 off the ocean. On 17 and 18 I was shivering as I was soaked through my rain gear. Worst day I've ever had on the course.

Can't think of any other bad conditions rounds I've played that have stuck in my head, but I played in the pouring rain yesterday. Couldn't figure it out on the front nine and struggled to a 39. The back nine was fun though. Started out with a bogey on 10, then birdied 11, canned a bunker shot on 12 on the fly (didn't even hit the pin). Bogeyed the next hole and then made a 10 footer for par on 14. Then proceeded to finish by birdieing three out of the last four holes to shoot 32. I certainly enjoyed it but the guys I was playing against weren't too thrilled.

Have had several rounds in bad weather. February last year comes to mind. Played Rye on the friday. On the elevated tees, you had to lean backwards to stay upright whilst driving. I lightly held my driver at the top of the grip between my thumb and forefinger and the wind blew it horizontal at 90°!

The following day, we played at Royal St Georges. Those of you that know the 16th (Thomas Bjorn hole, 165 yards par 3), we were scratch golfers hitting driver and 3 woods and still coming up short!

Played at Rustic Canyon one year with the Santa Ana winds. My cart would not go forwards into the wind! The greens were unputtable. On one green, the 11th, from 35 feet, if the ball didn't go in the hole, it was blown back to you! On the 12th, my 8 iron off the tee went over the green, 280 yards away! Due to the hogs back nature of the green, I was unable to get my next shot onto the green and picked up after 6 attempts!

But great fun.

I remember I played a high school tournament in Great Falls, Montana I believe my Junior year.. We showed up and it was a little chilly, probably around 45-50F. After 9 holes it was down to 26F with about 15mph wind.. WITH SNOW .. and really it was more like sleet. Everyone bought out the heavy duty mittens and stocking caps and such in the clubhouse at the turn. At one point holding onto the club no matter how dry the grip was was not an option because our hands literally would not close around them. Eventually I just wrapped a towel around my grip for each shot and that made it thick enough to hold onto and played the last 4 or 5 holes like that not being able to swing more then about a half swing without losing the club. Was supposed to be a 2 day tournament.. we got to the other course the next day and there was a skiff of snow on the ground and they just called it .

A little rain down here in FL now seems like nothing...

Semiole Golf Club: Fast conditions in the wind.

Greens and Fairways were baked out (in a beautiful way). Made for phenomenal playing conditions. Putted a ball off the green and into a deep bunker after only using enough of a putting stroke to get the ball moving.

When I live in Colorado I played in Hail, Sleet, Rain, snow and winds that made the flag, no lie, touch the ground. The winds were so bad it was blowing rocks off the mountains. I got a full rain check plus cart even after playing 13 holes. When sand or even peebles hit you it felt as if some one was shotting you or poking you will needles.

I played that course on a stormy windy day, what made it even tougher was the storm circled around and the wind was out of the east opposite of the prevailing wind and how the course was built to play. tough and nasty indeed.

a little links course in mullen, ne(the original). The course in not handicapped due to wind. Had a 40mph wind that seemed to shift into you wherever you went.

2007 Division 2 NCAA Regionals in Savannah. The name of the course was Savannah Quarters. Fairly benign practice round, but Day 1 of the tournament started with 20 mph winds and only got worse, and they continued straight through to day 3, which included a bit of rain as well. The winning score was +12 and second place was +18 in a field where normally -10 MIGHT be good enough to win over three days. Out of a field of 45, there were less than 30 rounds in the 70's COMBINED.
