What happened to my swing...help

Recommended Posts

A little background -

hcp - ~12-14

pw distance - 135-140y

I've been away from golf for many years and have been playing quite a bit recently, I used to have a very Hogan-esque swing. Pretty flat with a very low right elbow. As a matter of fact my practice swing still looks the same, pretty good actually. When I put that little white ball into play though it becomes much different. Somebody called me out on the course one day after a bad shot so I started with the video tape. I was in shock to say the least. Swing looks good about 80% of the way up, then goes completely upright, right elbow flairs out (lookin like Furyk) and the downswing is virtually straight down. I can't tell i'm doing it and wanna know how to fix it. I took this video and put the towel under the right arm to try and keep the elbow in. Head on video looks great (not included) but from down the line you can see the horror. The video is long, and about 5:40 in I actually put a decent swing on it. 90% of these shot were on the button around 135y and felt decent (until I looked at the video). I did blade the crap out of one though :). Any ideas would be appreciated.

pause at the top for awhile, this will help with the transition which is your problem (way too quick) and get rid of the towel under your right arm, alittle less knee flex ar address

main thought - slow down and hit balls with pause at top

p.s. no need to hit a PW 140 yards, tone it down to 120 tops and you gain control

interesting. you have a decent takeaway and turn. and then from 3/4 on yours hands go crazy and put the club way across the line, then steep, then there's nothing to do but stand up through the ball and come in with really high hands. usually it's the other way around where a bad takeaway or early extension thing or funky turn is causing someone to put the club in an OTT position with their hands.

you're obviously rehearsing trying to flatten it out in the downswing and come in shallower...etc, but it's not making any difference.

i'd start with much much much shorter swings. verging on pitch shots. even in your backyard or local park with a shag bag....trying to hit 50 yard shots with a SW without going past 9 o'clock. and verifying via video that you're indeed not going past 9 (because feel and real are very different). the feeling may also have to be that the club is pointing at something way behind you at the top (of your short swing).....other feelings are like your palms up and left thumb is pointing backwards. the caution here is that in order to get to this position you start taking everything way inside and sucking the club inside to get it behind you.....doing that's gonna will probably make you worse off than you are now. so try to stick with the takeaway you have or even with the club outside where it is now.....but in that transition around 9'clock on your short swings, slow it down, get the club pointing left and hit a lot of short wedge shots to ingrain that feeling.

took some info from both posts. Thanks, good to have swing thoughts to help through something. Weird loop still lingering, but vastly improved! Will post up some more video soon hopefully. FYI it was really hard to pause at the top, and for a while I could tell my swing plane had changed dramatically because my timing was so bad off (s-word and sometimes fat).

In your video it looks to me like you're standing too close to the ball. That would cause you to naturally adjust your swing plane from the flat takeaway to a more upright plane so you can hit the ball. It may also cause you to stand up through impact. If you take a look at your little rehearsals in the video you'll see that the swing plane points well outside of the ball. If you were to step away from the ball a little it would allow you to stay on a flatter swing plane and help you keep your spine angle. I'm far from a pro but it's an easy adjustment and worth a shot! Good luck.
