Village of Pinehurst

Need Recommendations

My group is taking a trip down to Kiawah Island next week. We are stopping to play Primland Resort on the way down, and were looking to stop in Pinehurst and stay the night prior to driving to Kiawah the next day. We were probably going to end up in Pinehurst around 3-4 PM and wanted advice on whether playing the Azalea course at Pinewild (Par 3 course) would be enjoyable as I haven't heard anything about it (we are tempted to play another course, but we are already schedule for 10 rounds of golf in 6 days). Anyone ever play it? If I was able to, I'd love to twist everyone's arm to play Dormie, but I doubt that will occur since we have dropped a good bit on this trip already. Any other suggetions?

We were also looking for suggestions for good bars in town that would broadcast the NHL playoffs, as we are huge Penguins fans, and they are scheduled to play that day. Anyone have any recommendations?

Headed there this Thursday and quite excited. Best site I've found thus far is www.sandhillsinsider.com. The restaurants tab has Sports Bars.

The site is best for hole-by-hole pics/descriptions of some of Pinehurst's finest courses.

southern pines is pretty cheap and not far from a very good sports bar.

Southern Pines is a Donal Ross "hidden gem", well worth playing if you have the time. The Hickory Tavern, on Rt. 15/501 is a great sports bar, with several dozen TVs, or Maxies, in Pinehurst, for a little more local experience.

Great trip you have planned there. Was able to go to Kiawah in October & Pinehurst/Southern Pines in November. As I have told anyone who'll listen, play the Dormie! There are some great bars, hangouts in the Village, but Hickory Tavern is the place for the playoffs. Probably will run into several "new" locals pulling for the Pens.
