Dead hand swing?

I was at the local Golf Galaxy this weekend just messing around with a few different irons. One of the employees came up to me while I was hitting the MP-60's and told me that since I am a dead hands swinger(what ever that means) that these irons wound not fit my game and told me I should play something like the Nike slingshot tours, I5's, or even G5's. Not knowing that I already play the I5's. Is this true? Because of my swing would I not be able to play more of a players iron?

Mmmmhmm. No offense to anyone working in Golf Galaxy in case there might be a member here who does... but the day I started listening to swing thoughts regarding club choice from a Golf Galaxy employee would be a chilly day in hades. ;)

Even so, it sounds like he's saying you don't have much hand action through the ball (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)... but I think that would indicate (one characteristic anyway) that you don't put that much spin on the ball... and thus might benefit from the clubs he mentioned because they have a tendency to hit the ball high. Someone who doesn't put much spin on the ball (I'm not necessarily talking about spinning wedges back) wouldn't probably hit the ball that high typically. So there might be some merit to what he was saying, but I wouldn't let that stop you from trying out a set of clubs that you like. You never know what the results might be :D

Good point and thanks for the reply. I have a high ball flight so I think I have some spin. I don't know. I am a new golfer and don't know much about the golf swing besides hitting the ball. Hope your right because I love the feel of a forged club.

Man if you like the way the 60's look... go with it. Half the battle with a golf club, be it irons, woods, wedges, or putters is the look of it. Typically if you don't like the way it looks, then it's not likely gonna work for you. The reverse is naturally true as well imo. ;) It's all about having fun, there are no set "rules" that you must follow when it comes to golf except the rules of the game itself and the rules of being a gentleman.

Former GG PGA Pro...

I would go back to the store and have them explain their reasoning for the advice they are giving you...

Judging by your post, you did not get an adequate reason for their advice...

If they can't explain their reasoning, then maybe that should tell you something...

The GG employee told me that the MP-60 are for a player with active hands(he states more of a toe down after impact) I thought I did this after I swing, but he said that I had a dead handed swing. Like I said I play the I5's and was wanting more of a players iron. I am currently an 8-9 handicap. Hope this helps.

That unfortunately, does not sound like professional advice...

So I suppose Tiger needs to steer away from forged blades when he is going to play a 'dead hands' shot...

I just hope that wasn't the PGA Professional giving out that advice...

Are you working with someone professionally in regards to lessons?

Seek his/her input, not a sales clerk at a retail store...

I am very interested in this thread, and I hope you guys are still watching. I have been in Cally BB 06 for the last year. These were fitted to me by a fitter in Norther VA. who put me in a +.75" shaft and 2 degrees upright. I'm 5 9 and about 235lbs. I've been powerlifting most of my life and thus the odd shape...very wide and thick in the chest and shoulders. The fitter told me this coupled with my short arms, I was "chopping wood". I've been told my swing is not bad by my instructors. I always felt that these (Cally BB) were somewhat clunky and "obtuse", but I got down into the upper 70's over the summer...probably more to do with my putting and long game with new hybrids. Nonetheless, I recently decided to buy some i5's, but when demoing these, and other irons, I felt the 6 iron I was swinging felt good in standard length with 2 degrees upright. Ping's online static fitter algorithm backed this measurement up. This was last week. I cannot keep from pulling the ball to save my life. Sometimes these pulls come out to a strong draw. I was getting ready to ditch the irons, as I don't remember having this issue in the past at all. Last night I re-read one of Hank Haney's books which explained the pull could be caused by over active hands...releasing too much or too soon, and that smaller grips would aggrevate this...going to a larger grip would have more tendency to produce quieter hands and thus more of a potential to slice or fade. My hands are normal in size...standard according to Ping. Do you guys feel that it would be worth it to give a larger grip size a shot? It's funny that the OP (Original Poster) of this thread was told the I5/G5's would be good for someone that has "dead hands". I wonder how accurate this person might have been.

Having said all of this, I fully realize my swing/hands could have changed to cause this, but I'm at the range almost every day and don't recall consciously changing anything.

I'm exausted from worrying about this. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Although it seems like it probably won't work, you may wanna try grounding the sole of your club more solidly as part of your set up routine. When I was using clubs that were too short for me, I had a problem with unconciously setting up on the toe of the club- you might have the opposite problem. Also, if the new i5's have graphite shafts and the BBs had steel, that might account for the change in size. Generally I think graphite shafts are .5 inch longer.

I agree with the above about the 'poor' advice that you were given.

I personally have a very active hand so I do have a lot of spin on my iron shots.

After watching Tiger hitting some very cool 'dead-hand' shots I tried it once recently on a Par 3 175 yds.

The hole slopes from back to front so I wanted to hit a shot that will land soft above the hole and just trickle back and not spin back too severely.

Well, it worked liked a charm....ball came down soft and just trickle towards the hole (missed the birdie putt of course) but I thought it was a really cool shot in that situation.

And it doesn't have anything to do with the irons that I was playing (704.CB).

Personally I get my knowledge/information here on Golfwrx before I walk into any golf store so I'm not a lamb for the taking.
