Anybody Seen all the Lawsuits against Fox for BORAT?

One of my friends called me with this so I decided to look it up. I was pretty surprised. The college kids in the RV are Sueing, the People at the dinner party are sueing, the Government of Kazakh is threating to sue. I see trouble in the works for Fox. LOL

There was a big to-do about possible lawsuits before the movie came out. According to the article I read everyone had to sign a waiver before they were in the movie. The thing is will this waiver keep them for getting in so much trouble.

Yeah, but if you look at alot of the posts on it on the internet. Most of them all say that the people got them drunk first and then had them sign the waiver. One would think that would nullify the waiver if it can be proved in any way. Also, I doubt the Kazah Govt. Signed a waiver. LOL That would be weird if this became a diplomatic incident.

Granted this movie was absolutely hilarious, but the whole time I was sitting there I was thinking about how this movie could end up being a disaster.

Yeah, but if you look at alot of the posts on it on the internet. Most of them all say that the people got them drunk first and then had them sign the waiver. One would think that would nullify the waiver if it can be proved in any way. Also, I doubt the Kazah Govt. Signed a waiver. LOL That would be weird if this became a diplomatic incident.

Hey, thats one way of doing busines...Take a client out, get him a little tipsy and then start talking business. They did the same thing. Not saying it is the way I would have done things, but thats the way the world works.

You do have a point in a way, but look at how they did it vs that. Here's some quotes:

Documents filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court Thursday accused the makers of "Borat" of luring them into a scene on false pretences, claiming the movie would not be shown in the US.

The suit says in October of last year, a
production crew took the students to a bar to drink and "loosen up" before participating in what they were told would be a documentary to be shown outside of the United States

"They were induced to agree to participate and were told the name of the fraternity and the name of their school wouldn't be used," said the plaintiffs' attorney, Olivier Taillieu. "They were put into an RV and were made to believe they were picking up
Borat the hitchhiker."

After a bout of heavy drinking, the plaintiffs signed a release form they were told "had something to do with reliability issues with being in the RV," Taillieu said.

Now, Talking about Different Scenes:

The Rodeo Scene: The event caused quite a stir. John Saunders, the Salem Civic Center's assistant director, told the Roanoke Times that if Borat and crew hadn't high-tailed it out of the arena, "There would have been a riot. They would have been killed."

Rowe told Salon that he'd agreed to let Borat sing, believing the story that Borat was a Kazakh journalist traveling across the country.

(a) if you don't want to look like an idiot moron, don't say racist and sexist things IN FRONT OF A CAMERA!

(a1) Unless you are predisposed to make such comments, would you say them in front of a camera? or at all?

(b) even assuming these students were told that the movie wouldn't be shown in the U.S., haven't they heard of the internet?

(c ) wasn't the requirement that they sign a WAIVER a tip off?

(d) when was the last time anyone had to "lure" a couple of college frat boys to drink?

(e) do you believe everything you are told, or do you use your own judgment? Say for example, like, READING the waiver instead of just believing it was about "reliability issues for the RV"?

My opinion? Idiots looking for a payday.

My advice: Don't want to be perceived as an idiot? Then don't act like one.

Charlie is right on the mark. Those frat guys from the University of South Carolina have no case because Borat exposed them for what they really are; rednecks! ;)

I would put anything in the lawsuit too if I was exposed as a racist bigot. These guys sign the release forms ahead of time. We filmed people AFROTC cadets for afrotc.com and before we turned a camera on these forms had to be signed. And if you're going to be on camera watch what you say anyways--that's rule #1!

being drunk doesn't excuse you from any leagal waivers you sign. It didn't work for daddy's little girl that ends up on 'girls gone wild' and it shouldn't work for these guys. I think that they just saw how much cash this movie is bringing in and wanted a little piece of the action.
