Etiquette Issue: Helping Others Look for a Ball

BJL

Recommended Posts

Waning practice?
After reading one of BR61's thoughtful posts, I was reminded that I am guilty of contributing to a decline in etiquette. As the years go by, I find that I do not assist others in the search for their "lost" golf balls as much as I used to. Similarly, others usually do not assist me in my search. Overall I think this simple gesture is falling by the wayside. ;)

Someone tell me to get off my duff and search in those woods, fescue, and U.S. Open-type rough, for my playing companions' errant shots.

Having played with Joe Kwok several times in the last few weeks, I can tell you that I would have walked a marathon helping him look for his drives as he continues his New Driver Search. :vava:

Back in the days of walking and carrying, my friend and I would help ... to a point. These two jerks were riding and one or the other was lost on just about anything longer than 120 yds. On the back nine and with the temp about 90°, the father-jerk had the temerity to comment that we weren't keeping up!

Now that I ride, I accept that it is part of the job to find balls, especially if there is one or more walkers in the group. After everyone has teed off or there has been an errant shot, I will zoom off to begin the search. Caps and headcovers are great markers.

I will help whenever possible, but if playing with someone that constantly hits the ball into the unknown can really mess up your own game. If the endless search should result in delays to the group behind you, that is a problem as well. I don't mind helping with the search, with in reason.

When I am playing with someone who tends to spray off the tee I will pay special attention to their shots to help expediate the search process.

I am guilty of the look away in displeasure. As a matter of fact if I make a really bad swing I won't look up at all. Then again I'm not the type of guy to search all day for a ball that wanted to get lost in the first place.

Considering the hackers that I play with (myself included), we've gotten pretty good at tracking down bad shots, lol. I ALWAYS try to keep an eye on my friends' shots just to help them out. I'm pretty easy going as-is on the course, so I'll point out just about any ball if I think the people need the help. It doesn't take too long, and I'd rather them find the ball then have to pull out another one.

On the flipside, there is a limit to how long I will search. There just comes a time when you've got to let it go. Maybe some kid will find it and save him/her some money from having to buy balls and keep him/her in the game longer. Sooner or later, all lost balls are found, it just may not be by you.

I do try and help someone find their ball within reason. Meaning, I will not look for every ball if the person continues to hit bad shots. It is not that I do not want to be helpful, but it starts to affect my game.

I am guilty of looking down in disgust on a bad shot, but I realize this is a bad habit and I am trying hard to correct it. The only time I ask someone where I hit my shot is when I did not see where it went off the tee. This is usually caused by the sun or other obstruction.
