I don't think the PGA guys have to pay for the tournaments because of the TV contract is so lucrutive for the PGA Tour. I know my wife had to pay $100.00 for each LPGA Tour event she played in.

Go figure...

Funny you mention the $100 per tourney. I heard several years ago that the guys had to pay $100 per event also.

If you make it on Tour, I think I was read somewhere that between travel, coaching, etc it was like 1 million dollars. But the Sponsorships and other contracts pretty much offset that.

An example of an Open qualifier costs and fee structure.

As you can see a PGA Tour member pays $0 for the qualifier and if they get through, that "fee" would include their entry fee to the tourney. Which means tour members - those who just are not high enough on the priority list so they have to try and monday qualify are paying zilch for entry.

There certainly used to be an entry fee for PGA Tour events up until a few years ago but it seems that fees now only apply to non-members. Thus a golfer receiving an exemption might have to pay a fee but a regular tour member who earned their membership would not.

That is the best I can tell from looking at current player guides thta do not mention entry fees anymore.

Will post more info if I find it.

As Croonie mentioned a full year on the PGA Tour (and close to that for Nationwide) will run you about $150,000 budgeting just over $5,000 per event if you were to play 25-30. Of course some guys would have a taste for more than the Motel 6...

Obviously things like courtesy cars, private housing, and free player buffets certainly help the younger guys trim expenses.

Guys I know playing smaller tours (Canadian, Hooters) can still rack up $70,000 in debts with close to $20,000 for Q School if they happen to get through 2 stages.

Not too many guys actually turning a profit but if you get to the promised land, and stay there, you ceratinly will!!

dont certain players get appearence fees to turn up like the tiger and the big 5 ???

I don't think so on the PGA tour. But overseas, yes. Typically they do. Like when Tiger plays in some random tournament over in Asia or New Zealand... etc (not referring to this week or last week, though I wouldn't be surprised if he was getting paid for them)

If anyone remembers the Canadian Open this year heres a good story. Victor Ciesielski is an amateur here in Ontario and Monday Qualified for the event. He showed up to register on Monday or Tuesday and he didnt have enough money to register for the event. If I recall it was in the story was in the Toronto Star and I think the fee was $75.

I know that here in michigan when you qualify for the Buick the actual entry fee for the tourney in minimal. The Buick Open has a two day qualifier to cut the field because lately we have had a bunch of hacks trying to monday qualify and they end up slowing down the actual qualifier. I believe it is like $250 to try to qualify, and if you make it they pop you for another $250. So the total for an average Joe being $500 to play with the big boys. Hell, I would drop $10,000 if I could just walk out there without qualifying just to milk the vans and say I played in an event. Only problem is I would have a tough time justifying that student loan. HAHAHA ;)

AS A FORMER TOUR CADDY THE PGA GOT RID OF THE ENTRY FEE OF $100 AROUND 1999 AND I DON;T THINK THEY EVER IMPLIMENTED MORE FEES FOR ENTRYS, PLUS THAT $100 WENT TOWWARDS VOULENTEER COSTS NOT TOWARD THE PURSE, AND THE ONLY GUYS WORKING FOR $600 AS CADDIES ARE GUYS THAT WORK FOR ROOKIES AND GET A BIGGER PERCENTAGE THEN THE NORMA 5,7, 10 PERCENT THAT MOST GET, FRIENDS OF MINE THAT ARE STILL CADDIES OUT THERE GET $1000 FROM MOST VETRANS AND WHATEVER THEY CAN GET FROM HAT ENDORSEMENTS FOR THAT WEEK/YEAR, AND PLAYERS RARELY BUY YOU DINNER, YOU ARE USUALLY SICK OF THEM AT THE END OF THE DAY AND ON YOUR OWN UNLESS ITS A SPECIAL OCCASSION

Thanks for the insight. As a small bit of advice - you may want to take your caps lock off - it is the equivalent of shouting online and considered bad form. (Before anyone else starts flaming you)

I think Hoot (he will have to clarify) was referring to dinner for himself as a player - not for his caddy.

Welcome to GolfWRX and we look forward to more post from a former caddy who can offer his inside the tour perspective.

I would think that if one actually got a tour card, entry fees would be the least of one's worries.....I've heard from a couple of guys just having a tour card is probably worth a half a mil just in endorsement deals, outing opportunities, etc.....Just make the tour and the $$ to pay the fees will come.....

there are no entry fees on the pga tour. the nationwide tour fees are $125, and they include $100 adminstration fee, $10 locker room attentdent, and $15 to the club repair guy. also to play the pga tour for one year is about $150,000.00 and that includes everything. Nationwide tour is about $100,000.00. keep in mind if you play better you have to pay your caddie more b/c they work in %. also q_school cost about 10 grand if go to allo 3 stages.
