Grip problem - club feels loose at top of backswing

Hi all,

 

I believe i've had a problem with the grip feeling 'loose' at the end of the backswing for some time. Specifically the left thumb seems to 'slip' around the shaft and the grip ends up in the fingers of my right hand with my right palm 'coming off' slightly.

 

Its sounds terrible but i've actually been managing to play half decent golf, but its starting to really bug me.

My grip feels different at the top of the swing too, but it seems to be the opposite of your problem. My left hand seems like it grips the club harder and my right hand gets loose. I don't know if this causes me too hits hooks.

Check out the stuff around the pics of Ernie Els's grip, specifically how he separates his right index finger a little. Don't really know if that's your issue but that's what was causing my right palm to come off a bit at top and it feels more secure now.

This could be the result of a swing fault rather than a grip fault. Are you on a decent plane?

Is your gloved hand hanging off the butt of the grip? The club can shift at the top if your hands aren't fully on the handle. Most grips have a white circle/line at the end of the grip, make sure your hands are below that line.

The grip starts in the fingers of my right hand.


The left thumb slipping is interesting. Do you get holes in your gloves there?

i've found that grip pressure analogy of "holding a bird" in your hands is misleading .. at least for me .. my grip pressure was TOO light and i would lose control of the club/face at the top .. i stil have trouble with this .. snead saying his grip pressure was a 4 is prolly more like a 7 or 8 for me ..

Thanks for the input guys.

Obviously i've tried gripping the sh*t out of it and that certainly works but i can barely swing past waist high!

A combination of things seems to have helped.

I can still feel a slight 'regrip' at the top but its much better and i can live with it.

My problem currently is when I am on top of my backswing i know it gets loose and when i hit the ball I hook it or top the ball. I look at the club and the face is in a different direction.

I tried to grip harder and softer but stil it happens. Not all the time, but at times it gets annoying.

Same here ... my hands are not that strong and my grip pressure also was too light. However, I think about gripping more firmly only in certain areas ... keys for me are the last 3 fingers of my left hand, especially the 4th one, and also keeping my right hand on top of my left thumb so everything stays together...at the top I can feel my left thumb directly under the club ... all that said, a jerky transition move at the top is going to doom almost any grip

It's my understanding that if you grip the club to tight your hands will re-adjust at the top of the back swing. Don't know if that is correct but I had this problem many years ago and was told this was the cause.

Have you been sized for grips? You said Bionic gloves help - Bionic's tend to be thicker than other gloves and perhaps this indicates your grips are too small for your hands.

I purposely release pressure with my glove hand at the top, then re-apply the pressure on the down swing. This allows me to get the face where I need it. I feel like it also gives me great tempo. I should also point out that I have an overlap grip.

The weird thing is, this topic could come up today and get the same answers.  It’s almost as if golf teaching and understanding of the swing is stuck in the dark ages.

 

One guy points out politely that if you cannot hold on to the club, it’s probably not a grip problem, but a larger swing problem, and he is promptly ignored.

 

Same would happen today.

I agree with the swing plane issue.  Check to make certain the butt end of the club is pointing at the ball halfway back.  If not, I find the force of the club starts to fight the grip and "gets loose".

Maybe it is better to take Bobby Jone's advice and open the trail hand at the top; "I always have a better feel of the clubhead if I permit my fingers open slightly at the top".
