Putter sole

Hello guys,

 

In the last month, I build my first putter. I just have an ordinary milling machine, not a CNC, so I did a flat sole for my putter. How you do to have a little curve under the sole ? Maybe with a bench-grinder ?

I would advise using a coarse grit belt on a belt sander, the bigger the belt, the better luck you will have. Do yourself a big favor and draw the radius you are hoping for, on the face of the putter in permanent marker. That will give you a loose guide for your goal. It will not be a quick process, so be patient. A bench grinder will do the same work, but not as easily. Remember, you can ALWAYS take a little more off, but you can never add back on what you grind or sand off, .

I don't know if I would say "expert", but I have been in your shoes. At those times, there were guys like Tom Slighter and Byron Morgan who reached down and gave me a tip or two that reallly pushed me along. They are two of the nicest guys in the putter world, don't let anyone ever tell you differently. You won't see their stuff flooding this site, but that does not mean they don't know their stuff, just means they aren't here.
Pictures are always encouraged with threads like yours. There are a lot of guys here who have expertise in a variety of fields that are always eager to chime in. Share what you do and it will always come back, ten-fold.

i would say expert. lamont is one of a handful of people in the world who can do what he does. if he says it might take some time...be prepared.

I will agree with Hebron. LaMont is truly one of a handful of guys in the business that can do what he does. The process he describes sounds so simple and elementary, but give it a try and you'll see just how much work really goes into that "simple" operation.
Just this morning I got a look at one of LaMont's latest creations over at theputterplace.com. If you have not seen his new "044" mallet, you need to check it out. From all accounts, it has the performance review that very few putters ever receive.
Worth your time.
