If you could design the next putter

What would your design be?
Hey Guys,

Figured this would be a fun topic as there will be a ton of different ideas. Say one of the Major OEM's came up to you and asked you to design their next putter. What would you design. What type of neck would it have. Headweight, markings. If you were given free rein, what would you come up with and why?

I'll Start:

I'd have to go with a CS. Preferably 350 gram Headweight. Rounded Bumpers for a smooth look. Dual Flange Sightlines. PVD Finish. Milled face with Milling marks visible on the Bumpers as well. Don't know what else, but thinking about it.

What would yalls be?

Hey Gavin,

You're missing the point. We're talking about a production putter that would be distributed, not a custom putter made for just for one person. Pretend Nike or Ping or any of the others came up to you and said help us design our new putter line. THis would include concept to production. What would you design for market. Keeping in mind Cost of the finished product to the consumer.

Great topic Chris-

I think I'd like to go with somehting simiar to a Mills softail. However, I'd want everythign to be rounded off on the bumpers, almost like they were melting. Now on top of that, I'd have to go with my standby 350gr, black chrome shaft, and gripmaster standard pistol. Oh, and for the final touch, I'm really loving the idea of this in a heel shafted design. Similar to that old PING Karsten 30th anniversary putter.

I would LOVE a Ping Zing style putter but milled out of carbon steel instead of the tinny feeling stainless that they use. Nice 350g headweight with a nice dark satin finish and no paint fill except the sight line in white that is both on the thin topline AND down in the cavity for a nice long line for alignment. For shaft, just their standard stepless, and a nice old school black rubber Karsten etched (the smaller pistol style) grip!

I love the looks and sleek style of the Zing(2) and the way it sits. Would love it a lot more with a little weight and softer feel! Also, so many manufacturers are using those huge chunky toplines, just like they are in their irons, and a lot of people would like the thin topline the old Pings have to offer.

:crazy2: :) :)

Getting some great replies :crazy2: I agree. Of all the older pings, my favorite is the zing. I had to add so much weight though that it took away the feel of the putter. I am loving the idea of the softtail heel shafted. I have to look up the 30th Anniv. Putter. Somehow I don't have it saved on my computer. LOL

Let's keep the replies coming guys :):):):)

I would have a Ping Zing 2 style putter but made by Scotty Cameron. Same waterial as the Inspired by Brad Faxon (Which is a sweet putter BTW) but as I said, in the Zing head (that means a browny oilcan colour). I would have a double sightline on the flange. 'Titleist' in the cavity instead of 'Cameron.' Slightly wider toe than the heel. 350 to 360 grams at 34". Any other variations would have the same swingweight.

I think Scotty already has one like that but I don't know what it is called.

What a great thread.

I agree that there needs to be a nice CS Newport / Answer style putter available retail, and the word that one is coming has me awfully excited.

Josh is right that the FaxDay just didn't look right with the Plumber's Neck, and is a much better looking putter with a "Santa Fe" / "Zing" neck.....maybe I should try and put my Zing-style putter back in the bag.....
