Help Me Become a Hogan-ite!

Recommended Posts

I've always followed this forum somewhat loosely since joining WRX, but have never actually posted for fear of making myself sound like a dummy! Needless to say, Hogan's Heroes has definitely sparked my interest in Hogan. Problem is, I don't really have much understanding about his swing. I've read 5 Lessons and picked up a thing or two in all of the various threads, but that's about it. I'm not asking for a full lesson here (I realize that some of you could write 100 pages about that), but could someone just point me in the right direction of where to start on my quest to understand/try to emulate his swing? Feel free to post back here or PM me!

Step 1: Remind yourself that this quest may not have an ending.
Step 2: Post your swing video from all angles so the veteran Hoganites here can tell you what Hogan swing attributes you already have.
Step 3: Say step1 aloud a few times a day. :)

The swing is definitely a work in progress! There should be a couple vids on the first page of the WITB in my sig, but I can repost them here.

What's your common ball flight?
[/quote]

On most days, a nice high draw. On days when my timing is off, I'll hit a lot of blocks/hooks.

The video quality is pretty awful, but it's just about all I've got.

Golf swing looks good.

Now, regarding the Hogan attributes......I have a list of Hogan "absolutes" that I'm after. So far, I've been able to successfully conquer 2 of them.

Here's a few of my absolutes:
- Clubshaft upright during upswing/backswing
- Extreme lag and layoff in transition
- Head and right shoulder stay back during impact
- DTL view; right elbow super close to right hip, and sometimes left forearm can be seen
- Right foot drag
- Clubhead does not flip over after impact
- Impact spine-angle maintained well after impact
- Post impact, hands exiting ver near left pocket, while clubshaft is still pointing at target line

These are a few.

The first thing I see that you do is right foot drag. I can never see well in a fast-speed swing. I will have to slow yours down to see the rest.

I'm sure the real instructors here will chime in and give a professional opinion as I am only at hacker level myself.

Did you read slicefixer's document? I think that will give you a good understanding of how Hogan's swing works. Read the short one (50pgs) and long one (200pgs)

BTW, you have a REALLY good release IMO. I love it. It has some issues for sure but through impact you are actually more "Hogan" than most. You swing reminds me of Hunter Mahan's when he was still in college Pre-Foley.

I'll do a quick DTL and FO animated gif of you vs Hogan sometime tonite so you can see the likeness and differences.

And it is interesting to me that you seem to have no fear or care for what anyone thinks about your swing, whether it be good or bad or whatever. I've got lots of golf respect for ya.

Man, I've been asking the "Hoganite veterans" to put their swing vid up for a year now. Dude, I think you just outdid them in 10 minutes. lolol!

That is a boat load of lateral sway back, and way too wide of a stance IMO.

I totally agree with you. You should've seen me at the beginning of the season, though. Feet were extremely close together and my weight stayed on the front foot all the way through the swing. Looks like I may have overdone it a little. :russian_roulette:

Lol yeah I've seen some of the conversations about how reluctant people are to put up their swings. I've never really understood it. Fragile psyches?

I'm typically in the mid- to high- 70's playing from about 6600 yards. During the summer, I get to practice and play usually 5 days a week, but during the school year, that number is usually closer to 2.

Lol! Yep, I'm part of the golf investigation division. We're looking for the person that has been accused of steal Hogan's swing!

But, on a serious note, I plan to teach golf when I retire in 15 years. That's why I want to learn so much about the swing, expecially the wrong parts about it. I could have hired a swing coach (FATS!!!! I was at Lake Lanier this past weekend but I promised Kim I wouldn't take my clubs. Grrr!) last summer and would be close to my Hogan swing goal by now, but I want to do and exprience ALL the wrong stuff so I am able to see it in others swings. I wanna know exactly what it feels and looks like to be OTT, and flat, and upright, and in the slot, etc. If I only knew all the right things to do in the swing, I would be useless as an instructor.

I will be teaching the Hogan swing dynamic.

When I ask about all the stuff about a persons golf game, I'm trying to build a player profile of the person in my mind to know where they are and what the cause and effects are when they change things.

Lol. Don't be alarmed Mike. I won't be advising anyone until I retire in 15 years (you probably missed that post). The only thing I know how to do right now is make animate gifs and pick out Hogan-styled swing traits. That's why I said I am at hacker level and the real pros will chime in...man, you gotta read these posts a few more times thru.

Nope..wrong again Sir. The only 2 things I've mastered are that I have a club in my hands and that there's a ball in front of me. The rest of it still looks the same as when I started at all this swing rebuild stuff.

I had to look that one up.

When I found it..........LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! Absolutely right. The student I'm already working with is me. Whew...that Luke verse was good. Still laughin!! Man have you seen my ridiculous golf swing.?? Who would ever listen to me??? Muahahahaa!

Hmmm, as I think about it, there are a few people that have reached out for help from me. I don't get it. They're already good golfers. Their swings are already built and solid. Makes no sense to me.

Honestly, I don't really care if he hacks it around (which I'm sure he's over-exaggerating!). It's not like he's rebuilding my swing; he's just helping me understand Hogan a wee bit better!

Hattori,

I won't be helping you understand Hogan at all. I'll just be providing an animated image as a reference point for you.
