"Golf's Grand Design" PBS - Friday Aug 3

For those with an interest in such things, PBS will air a special program about golf course architecture Friday, August 3 @ 10PM ET.

 

 

"Golf's Grand Design focuses on golf course architecture from the 1880s through present day featuring some of America's best known and influential courses: the National Golf Links of America on Long Island; Baltusrol in New Jersey; Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx; Augusta National in Georgia; the Dunes in South Carolina; Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina; Crooked Stick in Indiana; Sand Hills in Nebraska; Shadow Creek in Las Vegas and Bandon Dunes and Old Macdonald in Oregon.

 

Behind these unique courses are the colorful and creative individuals who helped fashion them. The rise of golf in America over the past 130 years is due in large part to the artistry of the people who design the courses where the game is played.

 

Beginning with the Scottish influence and rudimentary course layouts of the early years, the program traces the significant periods of golf course architecture through the Golden Age of the 1920s, the dominant influence of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in the post World War II era, and the role of such contemporary architects as Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Tom Doak, Ben Crenshaw, and Bill Coore."

I watched it tonight, pretty good show. My disdain for Pete Dye is still intact. I got a good chuckle when Alice Dye said you would not be able to identify a Pete Dye design by a single feature. As expected i really enjoyed the bit on Coore/Crenshaw along with Doak and the guy from Bandon.

Fairly light in content but it did offer a good general overview of the evolution of the American golf course. I liked that they brought things full circle and presented the so called "renaissance" in golf course design where some of the modern architects are returning to the traditional values of the "golden age," and the vision (and very deep pockets) of guys like Mike Keiser and Dick Youngscap.

As for Dye, I do like that he changed things up and broke the mold of the established style of the time. I think he started to get goofy after he got the TPC Sawgrass job and from that point on seemed to delight and dedicate himself toward confounding and irritating the pro golfers.

On the other hand, Nicklaus' comments further cemented my dislike for him as designer with his belief than only a champion golfer such as himself can design a good golf course.

Much of the commentary was provided by Ron Whitten, who is the Golf Digest architecture editor. He co-authored a book with Geoffy Cornish called "The Golf Course," which I happened to pickup in the bargain book pile a long long time ago. I would credit this book in sparking my interest in golf course architecture.

i TRIED to see this but for some reason, in Los Angeles, our PBS station is now a pay for view...what? public? getting govt. money? and we have to order it? no thanks.

You mean your cable/satellite provider charges for it. I'm pretty sure you can pick it up over the air for free.

Regarding dye.....i believe he has done some very good projects from about 1990.and on. The stuff he built through the 80s was often over the top, but he started softening his courses later on. Not all of them mind you....and none are easy....but certainly i feel his courses tend to be more playable later in his career.

You mean your cable/satellite provider charges for it. I'm pretty sure you can pick it up over the air for free.
