How do 27 Hole courses manage Tee times?

Hub

Recommended Posts

I'm doing a weekend at a course with 3 distinctly seperate 9's. We'll be playing 4 rounds so I was about to book tee times and then I got to thinking about how they manage to organize who can tee off when and where with minimal disruptions.

Is there a standard way courses go about this? I was thinking we would pick and choose which 2 9's made up each round of 18, but maybe it doesn't work like that?

Courses I play at with 27 holes normally rotate which of the two nines they will be using for the 18 on any given day. Then the other nine on that day is used for players who are looking to only play nine holes.

It may be different elsewhere, but that is how it has been at the two 27 hole facilities I have played at.

Most daily fee courses will set out 2 groups per tee time. rotaing every 2 hours or so with maybe some lag inbetween for overlap.

9 holes = A, B, C
Simple Example: 7am-9am:

Course 1 consists of A and B,
Course 2 consists of C and A

9:30-11:30
Course 1 consists of B and C
Course 2 consists A and B

12:00 - 2:00
Course 1 consists of C and A
Course 2 consists of B and C

Sounds like you're playing 36 holes a day for two days? Highly unlikely you'd be able to just pick and choose which nine's to play on each round. I'm sure the facility has a set rotation. First I'd check to make sure all three 9's are in play that weekend. At my 27-hole home club they have 9 holes closed for maintenance all summer (Florida). My biggest tip (no pun intended) would be to take very good care of the Starter.
18 on Friday, 36 on Saturday, 18 on Sunday, but yeah I figured with dry conditions it's possible they have one 9 shut down anyway. What's is tipping the started going to do for us? Not being sarcastic, but that's just not something I've done before.

This system wouldn't work because say at 9:00, you would be starting groups and groups would be turning to the back nine at the same time. Using the A, B, C format, the way it would work is this:

7:00-9:00
A-B
B-C
C- 9 holes only

9:00-11:30
A-B only

11:30-1:30
A-B
C-A

1:30- end of day
C-A

To answer the OP's question, the course probably has a set rotation to where you cannot request certain 9 hole comibinations. Unless they aren't very busy, then they can likely work with you.

7am to 9am tee times off all 3 nines: A, B & C
Course closed after 9am till 11:15 while groups make the turn:
A-C
C-B
B-A
Course re-opens all 3 tees around 11:30 for afternoon rotation

This is how I've seen it at busy resorts. One in particular comes to mind. You could play any combination, it was dictated upon which 9 you started on.

Worked at a 27-hole private course and we ran it as below. Perhaps a bit more complex than you were asking, but it goes to show that there is some thought behind the golf shop counter regarding course management. A, B, and C represent course names below, but we would try to rotate the courses as best we could based off the below timing to give us an even distribution amongst play on the 3 nines.

A-> B All Day

B->C 8-9:30

C for 9-holes 12pm-> EOD

This allowed a main 18-hole rotation for the day (A->B), but also a secondary 18 (B->C) for roughly 36 players assuming 10 minute slots. The C course was not started on so the maintenance crew could do any serous work/touchups until the 8am group turned at roughly 9:45-10am. The C course could be played for 9-holes once the 9:30 B->C group turned around 11:30, and if we had room on course A we would try to turn any groups wanting to play 18. The only issues arose when the 8am groups off course A played quicker than anticipated (which they often did because the better players wanted off first for the untouched greens) and reached their second 9 before the 9:30 B->C group teed off. However, if the better groups played course B->C then they could fly because nobody would be ahead of them due to us not starting anyone off C until noon. Our course C was a bit of an ugly stepchild and most members did not want to play it because it was hilly and tough to play/walk, so a lot of players always wanted A->B. This was great as an employee because later in the day C was wide open for a quick 9 and we could usually turn to A without a problem.
