Ivy League Golf

Hey everybody,

 

I was wondering about the difficulty of playing on the traveling squads of most Ivy League universties. Viewing scores and results, I have noticed there is a pretty great disparity between some of the better and weaker teams in the Ivy lague. For example, Princeton fields a very competitive squad (ranked #1 for academics-first golfers by Golf Digest) while Harvard fields a weaker team. Does anyone know if recruiting occurs for the less competitive squads or are those teams comprised mainly of walk-on players?

What year are you in high school?

 

I am a sophomore who is looking at ivy leaque golf programs and beginning the recruitment process. The thing Ive noticed is that ivy leaque programs are similar to other programs and their arent really that many differences. Check out ivyleaguesports.com and you can see the rules and such. Princeton, Yale, and Penn are the ivy league powers while Dartmouth, Brown, Harvard and others are weaker.

Our college team plays with Princeton quite often, they normally have a fairly strong team. Im not sure about some of the other schools. Yale's golf course is supposed to be pretty good.

Princeton's golf course isn't super, but Harvard plays matches at the Country Club (host of several U.S. Opens and the Ryder Cup in '99). Anyone know about Dartmouth or Brown's courses?

Basically, if you can't get into an Ivy League school based on your academic merits, then golf won't get you in. If you are a top-notch player and you are borderline getting in or not, then it would probably help.

Dartmouth has their own course which is very nice.. I think Brown plays at the Agawam Hunt Club which is walkable from the campus, but i know they have a couple of practices at my home course Wannamoisett which is right down the street from Agawam. Princeton's course is Springdale.. its owned by the university... It is fairly short and in ok condition for most of the year.

if you plan to be playing ivy league, then you should be able to get into the school academically first, sports is the last thing on their mind when it comes to acceptance. thats why they are ivy league.

I just read in the book Admission Matters that the acceptance rate for recruited athletes is almost 50% higher than the school's average. I am a good student (4.0 unweighted at great public high school) and would apply to elite schools anyway, but a boost of that sort seems very appealing. Of course, I imagine the balance between playing competitive golf at Harvard would compensate for the high acceptance...
