Changing the loft on my irons

Should I?

I am 16 years old and I am about 5'7" and my irons are definatly too upright for me. Some of the kids I play with say I should get them flatted but my dad says I shouldn't because I would just out grow them. What do you guys think I should do?

You wouldn't want to change the club lofts, but the lie angle. You should have someone check you out on a swing board, then you will know if you need to flatten the lie. I am not sure if Hogan Apex's are forged. If they are, bending them to the proper lie angle should be easy. Playing clubs at the proper lie angle will help promote proper ball contact. Also, you don't want to create a swing that compensates for an improper lie angle.

lofts no, lies yes. that is very important and can have a big impact in ballflight if they are off. if your irons are forged bendign the lie angles should be easyand relatively inexpensive.

Sorry when I origanlly posted I was look at the loft on my irons and I guess I wasn't thinkin. Sorry I meant lie.

every iron set i have i have loft lied and tour lofts.There is such a difference.If clubs lie perfect for you and your swing they should in theory perform better.

first off you should have them flattened because you might not grow too much at your age, second to test if you need them changed take a piece of plywood about 12in by 12in or so but arounf that. in the middle put a little hole for the bal to go, then tape up the bottom of your club with duct tape and cover it all with black marker, put a ball in thee hole you made and swing away. check the bottom of the club for marks and if the marks are on the heel, they are too upright and if they are on the toe they are too flat. make sure to keep putting marker on the bottom and keep checking to make tsure the tape doesnt break, we dont want you breaking your clubs. also if you have forged clubs the lies will change with time and play so continue to check them. even if you get them changed now and outgrow them, you can get them changed again. you want to get better so do whats best for your swing and change the lies. good luck, sorry for the long post

If your clubs are too upright, flatten them, or the other way round... Be careful... If you are using cast clubs, they can take the stress from being bent easily. If you are using forged clubs, you can bend them a little bit, but be careful. While you are growing, you shouldn't really bend them more than 2* either way. As you grow, and need them bent back, if you are regularly bending them, this creates stress... Most manufacturers don't cover damage done from bending unless it is done by them, so probably send the irons to Hogan, or else confirm with Hogan that they are covered if they are damaged in the process...
