Let's hear it...

If playability were solely judged on looks and the feel of a club in your hands, Callaway's X-18 irons would win hands down. Reality sets in when hitting balls with these clubs. I am a 10.1 handicap that looked to move up to more of a players club from my three year old Titleist 822 OS. There is no reward to hitting the X-18 compared to the Titleist. Well struck balls fly 10 to 15 shorter with the X-18's. Slight mis-hits fly 10 yards right and 20 yards short of the Titleist. The Titleist's are back in my bag. The Callaway's are for sale. UGH.....

I guess I'm one of the few people who likes these irons. I got fitted for irons on a Vector, which was an awesome experience, and these irons came out as my best fit.

My ballstriking has improved greatly - with an increase in both distance and accuracy. Which has allowed my scoring average in turn to decrease.

Now I can just blame my driver when I don't score well....

These irons are excellent. They look a lot better than other pro series irons Callaway have made and yet they are still hugely forgiving. The Dynamic Gold shafts also work great in these irons.

Titleist TS2 16.5° w/ Tensei AV 65 Stiff

I tried out a used set of these today. So far, these are the best Callaway irons I've hit. I must say I liked these more than the X18 or Fusion. It was a 4-SW set with stiff flex shafts. I was a bit concerned about hooking the ball with these irons, considering I usually am flirting with a slice. Not sure if the previous owner had them custom fit (the danger of trying out a used set). They still didn't impress me enough though, but then again neither does Ping. I appreciate they're reputation on the market, but I haven't found a club from either company that's been able to find it's way into my bag.

after having a disappointed try out, decided to give callaway another chance today. went to the distributor and try out the pro series x 18. currently, i am playing the x - 14 irons with tx90 shafts. hereby are the general characteristics on the x - 18 irons (nspro and dgr300):

- great feel when contact. off centres arent too bad. felt alot of vibrations on the x - tours.

- distance remains the same as my current irons.

- the outlook looks better on the grey badge rather than the blue ones. i have no idea why they come in two versions.

- more forgiving than the x - tours.

- softer feel than my x - 14 though.

since the characteristics of my x -14 ps does not differ much over the x - 18, i may want to wait for the x - 20 tours instead. I would recommend anyone who looks in a more workable iron yet able to play with forgiveness . look no more, this is the iron.

I have been using these irons for several months now and surprisingly really enjoy them..I never was a big fan of Callaway irons, but the minimal offset, forgiveness, and great feel has really impressed me. Ball flight is is high and the ball always lands soft...A great set for someone who needs some forgiveness, yet likes a smaller looking head with very little offset..

I'm typically a few years behind current technology, as I just don't feel the personal need to have this year's (or last's) model.

I scored my X-18 Pros two years ago (retiring my Cleveland TA7s) and have been ecstatic since putting them into play. I got a really nice set for a very reasonable price, and at the end of last season (imagine, golfing on November 12th in MICHIGAN!) I shot my best score of 74 (leaves were all down and blown off the entire course - including greens - and course was closing the next day).

It seems the lofts on this iron set are a bit stronger than many iron sets, so I'm not sure why some folks complain of these irons being short - I just don't see that through my play, but we all swing differently (I play my 5i to 175-185 yards on a TT R300 Dynamic Gold shaft).

Great set up at address, a bit smaller and less offset than the standard X-18s....these irons were everything I was looking for in something leaning just a bit more towards a forged blade and away from their oversized GI irons (which never really appealed to me).

To give you an idea of my progression, here it is in 2011 and I'm now leaning towards upgrading to either the X-20 Tour set or a similar-aged X-Forged set of blades (any input either way via PM would certainly be welcomed!). I'm typically 3-4 years behind the current technology.

I get some of the Cally iron bashing as far as head size goes on their standard iron offerings (they've always been too big for me) but after gaming these X-18 Pros for a couple seasons, I have nothing but good things to say about Callaway's irons, though admittedly my experience with them is limited.

This set I love, and it will truly be a sad day for me when they're replaced.
