Richmond, VA Guys..I Need Some Help On Conditions

Guys. I am coming down this weekend for the CAA Basketball Tournament. We had planned on playing at Independence Golf Club Saturday morning, had an 8:20 time.

 

But I hear it's still closed due to the snow you guys got..that we didn't up here in Maryland. Others we had considered playing were Hunting Hawk or Crossings. We're trying to stay within a 30 minute drive of the Coliseum so we can make it back in plenty of time for the games

 

Any idea if those courses are open and the condition, or other suggestions. I'll ultimately call them to find out, but just wanted to get a sense from some of you locals as to the status as of now.

 

Are they still calling for upper 50's low 60's tomorrow?

Just a bump as I'm headed down soon and hoping to get the latest on conditions at Hunting Hawk or Crossings. Wondering which ones might be best to check out given the snow that you guys had.

I would recommend Hunting Hawk over the Crossings based on past experience. Have not played either in a while, but Hunting Hawk is typically always in better shape and in my opinion a stronger setup.

If you don't mind the extra 10-15 minutes check out golf courses along 64 (Brickshire, Viniterra, Stonehouse, Kiskiack, Royal New Kent, etc). The worst of the snow was west of Richmond, so that eastern section might be in a lot better condition. I live about 10 minutes away from Independence and we're still soggy.

Hey yeah i just played hunting hawk yesterday. The greens were in pretty good shape all things considered. The bunkers though are kind of hit or miss. Depending on whether they're well covered by trees, some still had snow in them or puddles and were unplayable. The fairways and rough were definitely damp, so I'd play the ball up. Only some areas were too soggy to play. Overall it was a good outing for March golf... they do a good job there.

Make sure you check out golfnow - i guarantee you'll find a crazy like $19 tee time if you dont mind playing until 11 or so.

Actually I bet hunting hawk is going to be in great (for March) condition tomorrow - it's been warm the last few days so it probably dried out a bit. That's definitely the place you want to play. UNLESSSSSSSS you wouldnt mind driving about 45 minutes and check out a course just west of c-ville. It's called Spring Creek. Look it up - it's a golf digest top 50 public in the nation. They could definitely hold like a web.com event there, it's ACTUALLY a "championship course." Almost has a high-end country club feel to it - like you're at Avenel or Congo in MD. Again check out golfnow though because I have played there for $20 at noon using that site.

+1 for all those "west" courses though. All of the Traditions are always in good shape. Royal New Kent is a realllllly nice course - it's by the same guy who designed tobacco road down near pinehurst. It's a pretty whacked out course, really tough, but definitely an experience you'll remember for good reasons.

Spring Creek is awesome ...... Played it with fellow WRXer DoubleNuts last year ....... I've played it 4 times ...... Great course !!!

Spring creek is unreal. Richmond was just soaked after the snow. I was home on spring break and it was just miserably wet. Home HH was alright. Not a bad course when the conditions are good. It just gets so much play its unbelievable.

Thanks for the info guys. We actually ended up at Ceossings. HH had an outing,

First offer he staff at Crissings was awesome, really nice guys and accommodating.

Really liked the course. I feel it was in very good shape for this time of year. Bunkers were the only issue they were pretty much hard packed. But still very playable. Just had to allow for more bounce than normal.

But only had two or three "mud" balls all day. It was just a Friendly casual round so we were generous with LCP

Liked the layout, it really seemed to have some character to if. I also bet it is a very pretty course in the summer when everything is green.

It had its share of right holes, but also some where you had plenty of room.

The one thing I'd say that was most distinctive was, the architect protected the greens with some pretty clever bunker placements. Not bad or anyrhing. But I found myself really thinking about my approach shot more than usual.

We got out early so pace of play wasnt a problem we finished in about 3 hours and 15 minutes. So we made it back for the basketball with plenty of time to spare.

I would definitely play it again if I was in the area.
