adding club length = longer distance?

I recently bought a set of nike vr split cavity irons that were supposed to be a half inch longer than standard. After taking the grips off to regrip them, I find one inch extensions throughout the set. The lofts are on average 2 degrees weaker than my previous set, Adams A7's.

 

Will the added length of the clubs translate into extra yards? I am still adjusting to the added club length, played a few rounds recently in Myrtle Beach and they seem to fly close to or just under the yardages I am used to.

 

I know there are many different factors to consistent distances...swing speed, lie, wind, etc., but I was just trying to get a handle on pulling the right club...again as a "in general" thought process.

 

I hit them this weekend but more for feel than distance and the wind was howling in my face. Bad judge of distance while practicing but the more I swing them the more comfortable I am getting with them.

Anecdotally, I just cut 1.25" off my driver to bring it to 46.25". I have gained distance and accuracy. Although the potential for a bigger arc is there with longer clubs, you are also adding swing weight and potentially messing with the optimum lie angle for each club, basically making them harder to hit solid. Unless you have alligator arms, standard length is probably your best bet.

You had a 47.5 length driver, thats really long and cumbersome. Cutting it back gave much more club head
control and a more solid strike. No wonder it plays longer and more accurate. Smart move.

If you find yourself hitting shots a bit fatter than normal with the longer length, there goes the increased swing speed being lost due to friction

I fit standard length and have done that +1/2" length experiment. It does increase distance, 5 -8 yards, but also fat shots and shots hit off line

My Dad will be 92 this year and plays a 9.5* TM (older model) that's been extended 1" to about 46 1/2", I think. He has a long, smooth swing and is able to hit it on the sweet spot most times. Still shoots his age (or ~5 strokes below) a few times a year.

He's my hero! (There's no way I could hit his driver!)

[/quote]Why did you have such a long driver.?! thats the length long drivers use. Almost impossible to control. The standard retail length is 45-45.5 where as the standard on tour is 44.5. Many pros such as Donald and Garcia play sub 44 inch drivers.....
