Dropping Strokes off my score---Driver help

Two summers ago: RAM FX irons and woods, steel iron shafts. Mentality--swing as hard as possible to achieve max distance for each club. Rounds between 110-120. Baseball Grip

 

Last Summer: New Adams Redline Irons. Stiff 75g graphite. No woods--3iron hybrid, Mentality--swing smooth and balanced. Rounds between 93-108. pinky locked between middle and index finger. right hand coming over top more. (I had a PGA pro give me some tips on my grip).

 

I took the driver out of the bag because it was costing me more strokes than it was saving. Hitting 3 or 5 off the tee gets old quick and I was getting a consistent 235yd with the 3h

 

First round this year: 91. However, I used my father's Cobra offset and made great solid, mostly straight contact. S9-1;9.5 degrees. Shaft: Aldila DVS-HL 50g-stiff. M speed tuned (ball speed 110-140; kick low; toque 4.9). He will not let me take it from him because he hits it well too.

 

Given the improvement of my game, I'm thinking I might be able to drop more strokes by adding a driver i can control. I was able to control my old Cleveland driver (non-offset 8.5) at somepoint before things started going downhill. I also tend to hit the ball at downswing/midswing as opposed to on the way up.

 

Question: Would an adjustable driver adjusted to my settings (say closed face) be different than an offset in terms of helping with the slice?

Well, last post is no longer relevant. Dad bought me a cobra S3 adjustable from his co-worker at a steal. No details on shaft yet. Guess he couldn't handle me smashing his driver 50yds farther than him. i also found some posts discussing the offset/closedface/draw bias, so I've been able to educate myself a little more.

If this new driver doesn't work in combating the slice, I'll get some lessons, which is probably the ideal answer anyway.

that's great you and your dad play together! I get to play with my 82 yrold grand father .. good times good times. if you have golf channel check out the golf fix Monday nights at 7 they have lots of great tips on there.

Offset driver....I am a 4 handicap and have been playing a offset driver for many years now. Its a mental thing for sure, my swing speed averages at 107 so i always have to buy a head and put a shaft on. I like doing that anyway, you get to pick what shaft best fits you. I have a cobra s3 max with a pro launch blue 65 stiff tipped 1 1/4 and its a hogg! Love it. Go with a low kick shaft, that will also help alot squaring up at impact

Just a little correction in terminology. Actually no modern driver that I've ever seen has offset. They actually have "on-set" - the leading edge of the face is in front of the shaft line. Offset is when the leading edge of the face is behind the shaft line. Offset is not the same thing as face angle - which is what you are looking for.

And yes, a closed faced driver, can help get the face square on contact for some people. It seemed to work for you with you're father's driver so no reason to doubt it wouldn't with other drivers. It doesn't have to be adjustable if the face angle is already closed. For most of the adjustable drivers you can close the face by increasing the loft setting to max.

Didn't hit the new driver well on the first round, but you're not supposed to try it out then anyway. It's not the arrow, its the archer. Have since taken it to the range and tried to keep my hips from getting out in front and bringing my swing more inside-out. Strong success after one range session.
