Getting rid of newer Callaway driver for older TaylorMade Burner

Anyone ever get rid of a newer driver for a trusted older driver?

 

My clubs got stolen a year ago, with the insurance money I spent wisely and got some cashback deals at golfsmith since I bulk ordered and ended up with some extra cash.

 

I ended up getting the Callaway Razr Tour Authentic thinking the better shaft and adjustability would help. On the launch monitor in Golf Galaxy the thing was a beast, but on the course, it seemed like I lost 30-40 yards on my normal drives, better control minus the pushed shots left, but distance was so much less. I figured it was a learning curve. Played it for a year, several mishits, (I seemd to always hit the club on the heel side of the sweet spot no matter what), and changes in the set up of the club and finally I decided to go buy an older taylor mader burner superfast tour like my old one for a whopping 60$ on ebay.

 

Man.. What a difference I have been playing with appoach shots so much closer now and have not had any mishits. I will be selling the Callaway Razr Tour soon. Haha

If you are consistently missing on one side of the club face then it is likely the club is the wrong length for you.

Most modern drivers are too long and heel side misses are caused by too long a club. Try cutting the club down by a half inch and see how that improves your ball striking.

The half inch will reduce the swing weight by 3 points, if you don't like the feel then adding 6g of weight to the head will correct the swing weight.

As the std swing weight of the driver is high, I would suggest cutting it down and trying it as is.

Interesting thought.. But the superfast tour is 46.5 inches long I believe and the callaway razr fit your is 45.5". I don't know why I just can't hit that club well. I would typically line up with the ball off the end of the toe to actually hit it sweet. The super fast doesn't need that adjustment for me.

Well, I didn't get rid of my new driver, however, last winter, I bought the "golfsmith" driver head that was on sale for $7, matched that with AXE FW shaft R flex, hard step by an 1" to see how that would play. Just as an experiment for total of $25.

Well, that $25 driver was straighter and longer than any driver to date.

Yeah, it is not the brand name driver, and I made it as a very cheap experiment, and it ended up better than "was" current driver.

I personally don't care about brand name, as long as it does what it suppose to do. Hit it long, hit the fairway in consistently. Of course, I pride myself on my driver, since I put it together.

Friends look at my driver and ask, "What the hell is this driver?" to start with, then ask if I can make them one. LOL

To answer OPs question, I think as long as you go back within 5 years or so, I don't think technology has changed that much other than the adjustability...so it would be perfectly fine to ditch the new one for older one, as long as you feel more confident, hit more fairways off tee, and as same or longer distance with the "older" driver.
