Hello everyone

I am a new member who recently just started getting seriously into golf. Before this year, I played maybe 5 rounds at most (9 hole). Whatever the reason though, the bug has bit me. I cant seem to play enough now.

I think the bug bit me the day I bought my irons. I was sorta kinda looking around or a cheap set of irons because maybe I was planning on golfing more often. I didn't want to break the bank in case I really didn't get into golf (as sometimes happens with my hobbies). I went to a local shop (Edwin Watts) and tried some irons. Of course, all of the ones I liked and could hit decently were $800 +. I figured maybe golf wasn't the sport for me. As I was leaving, I noticed the used club section, an in it found a treasure (at least for me). For whatever reason I prefer a smaller/minimal/cleaner look to my irons (all my clubs actually). The clubs I found were some Mizuno MP-32's, for $64.00!! The guy at the shop said they were so cheap because no one is buying blades anymore, and he had them for over a year just sitting there. When I first saw them I liked the look of them, but wasn't planning on buying them because of all of the online discussions stating blades are too hard for beginners and the such. But after trying them, it was pretty much a no brainer. I really liked how they told me my shots were off, sometimes even hurting a bit. But when I made good contact WOW!!! Felt perfect and goes far! The last time I golfed my 8 iron was 110 yds like clockwork. Now it is 145-150 yds. These irons have helped me figure out a decent golf swing (as well as forums and online videos) and gives me feedback. My buddy has some older big bertha irons that are very nice to hit, but even the bad shots to me feel like the good ones.

So what is everyones thoughts on lessons? Are they worth it? Right now I do not use a driver, as I was very inconsistent with it and I can nearly hit my 1H as far as my buddies hit their drivers (I know in the future I will need to get a driver I am just reluctant to do so now) Are there any drivers that aren't the size of cantalope? I want something that looks smaller. I use a 1H and 3H from the tee, or my 4 iron. I would say I am decent with my irons, able to get them all airborne sorta where I am aiming more consistently than not. I love my hybrids (feels like cheating). Putting-maybe some day...Wedges-Need some work not really good at short soft shots but full speed normal shots ok.

Clubs

Irons- Mizuno MP-32 4-PW

Driver- NONE

Hybrids- Adam pro a12 1 Hybrid, Cobra Baffler 3 Hybrid

Wedges- Cleveland 52*, 56*, 60*

Putter-Ping Scottsdale (I think its called)

Anyone have any tips of another club I should have (besides a driver for now)?

Welcome! Lessons...YES...but find a good instructor. Remember, sometimes you get what you pay for! You must be willing to work at it and plan on giving it some time. I took lessons for about a year (2 years ago) and when I started I was at a 16 HDCP. I am now down to a 7 HDCP but it was frustrating. I recomend at first, you commit to not playing any rounds and simply hit the range and work on what the instructor is telling you. Trust me, your "lesson" swing and your "on course" swing are two different beasts!

You can ask some of your friends who golf. Also, you can also start a thread on GolfWRX for members who live in SLC and ask if they can recommend a golf instructor. Here is some info from 2011-2012 Golf Digest for Utah's top rated instructors:

1. Doug Roberts; Jack Nicklaus Academy at the Ledges, St. George
2. Dan Roskelley; Logan G. & C.C.
3. Mike Smith; Southgate Game Improvement Ctr., St. George
4. Corey Badger; Golf Lab, Salt Lake City

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
