Interesting article about Tiger's current winning streak vs Nelson's.

I'm not trying to bash Tiger because I think he is an amazing golfer, and more importantly a fantastic role model, but you do need be careful when you compare Tiger's current winning streak to Nelson's. Mr. Nelson only missed one tournament during his 11 in a row streak.

This entire comparison is media driven just like the drivel about him and the tennis guy (sorry tennis fans, I just don't care enough to look up his name). There are some technical similarities, but there are so many differences even Tiger dismisses it.

Considering Mr Nelson's 11 wins came against players like Ben Hogan, and Sam Snead, to me,

its not a fair and accurate comparison.

Like Tiger said, this really is apples to oranges. Nelson technically wasn't even playing in actual "PGA Tour" events. Didn't the tour become "the tour" in the late sixties? Both great acomplishments but two different things really.

 

I also read once that Vardon had 14 victories in a row.....so only 7 more to go Tiger!!!! :rolleyes:

I have to agree. The two streaks are in entirely different eras and under entirely different circumstances. They are each great individual accomplishments in their own regard and should be treated as such by anybody that is knowledgeable about the game of golf.

i hate how they talk about this as what Tiger is doing is nothing compared to Nelson. Now no disrespect to his record but what Tiger is doing is way above it. Tiger is in an era where golf is growing and more and more people play. The competion on Tour is much tougher then back then where you had your 4 that were likely to win. Now anyone is just as likely to win as the other. Who cares if tiger takes off and plays then comes back and plays. Who cares, a record is a record regardless. The media just needs something to talk about related to Tiger.

This must be coming from the same people who say tigers grand slam, or Tiger Slam, doesn't count because it wasn't in the same year. It counts, held all trophies at once. This is the same thing. Just because he was a victim of circumstance and started his streak towards the end of a season shouldn't make him uneligible to go after a record like this. This is also PGA tour streak, not other tours included streak.

IMHO TWs streak is not the 2nd longest streak. It is the longest active streak BUT ONLY ON THE PGA TOUR.

 

IMHO Nelson's streak was made in continuous events. Even though it included different type events unless someone wins 12 CONSECUTIVE Pro events whether the Pro plays only the Philippine Opens (My national Open which a small event on the APGA) or 12 Masters for 12 years in a row Nelson's record is intact.
