Best Shaft for me vs. What i Have now...any other options?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So am currently gaming and R9 Supertri with Aldila VS Proto By You. Unsure of my exact swingspeed, but if i had to guess i would estimate at least 230-240 carry, with some drives rolling out to 250+.

I have a feeling that i'm loosing some distance due to my ballflight. I'm reasonable certain my ballflight is pretty high and may be loosing a few yards from ballooning.

Right now my loft is at the standard 10.5. I can crank it down a bit to 9.5 or so, however i was wondering if there were some lower launching shafts that could straighten my shots out aswell.

I'd be looking for something relatively affordable and easy to find around the BST.

Anyone?

XCaliber. Contact Robin at Arthursports, and he will help you select the right shaft, based on your profile.

I am using one, and there are various members here who are happy with it. Price is excellent, performance is great as well.

I am sure others will chime in with different shafts option, but this is my recommendation based on my personal experience.

Well, the ST is a fairly high spin head and a tip stiff shaft can help that a little but the vs-proto is already a low-mid launch shaft so I wouldn't expect big changes going to something with a stiffer tip (assuming the flex for the vs-proto is a good fit for you and not too soft in general).

Actual numbers would be useful - how much do you want/need to lower it? Changing loft will always be more effective than changing shafts (although with the ST, that means you'll have to be able to compensate for the more open face at the lower lofts).

I went from the vs-proto to the rip gamma in my ST. It helped a little but only really noticeable change in ballooning on those swings when I was putting 100% into it. Also tried other lower launching shafts with similar results. Of course your results may vary.

You might be able to 'simulate' a stiffer tip section by simply removing the 16 gm weight and lightening up the head. Yes it will drastically change the SW but this is just an experiment anyways. If you can manage a swing with the lighter head and notice a reduction in the ballooning, then it may be that a lower launching or stiffer shaft in general might help. If you don't see any noticeable difference than that means the best route is probably changing loft or moving to a different head.

That is a great driver I know more than a few very good golfers that still have this driver in the bag. I will ask one question to you before I make a shaft recommendation, and that is. Your driver offers 24 combinations which allow for 75 yards of movement have you adjusted your driver in all 24 combinations? I myself went from low end shafts to the Graphite Design Tour AD DI-6 and I have never felt such a drastic change in a club head. In my experience fitting people I have always stressed proper shafts when you find the right shaft it makes your game better when you put a good move on the golf ball. I personally would get away from Aldila, tour professionals play these shafts but they are using the $500-$800 dollar versions. I believe Jason Days driver shaft at Merion was $800 (the article is on Golf WRX)

I would recommend getting your numbers with your current shaft. Ball speed, launch angle, and spin rates. Then try different shafts till you find the one you hit best. If you are ballooning your tee shots that says to me your shaft is too weak, the shaft you are playing has a low/mid launch angle which will promote higher ball flight. Maybe try something with a higher kick point?

Good shafts cost money this is pretty much a fact. There are affordable shafts out there (less than $200.00) that are amazing. When you hit the right shaft it feels great and paying for it becomes less painful. Do some research on the different shaft options that are out there this will give you an idea of what certain shafts will do. If you arm yourself with a little information if will speed up the process.

Good Luck!

I think both yourself and Stuart may be on the right track. I do have a simulator session booked a week or so from now, i guess i can come back with some more solid numbers.

I was thinking about taking some weight off the head to stiffen the shaft, as well as possible tuning down the loft.

I wasn't sure about the specs of the VS, when i purchased it i was told that it would be a whippier stiff, with mid launch. I got a great deal for the whole driver and it's worked out nicely for me. Like i said, i'm just thinking of getting MORE>!
