History of Mizuno forged irons

Some may not consider Mizuno to be a JDM since they are a global company.

But in any case, Mizuno does make fine golf equipment.  Mizuno forged irons are played by many professionals and amateurs around the world.

 

I was doing my research on forged irons and came across the Japanese Mizuno iron website and wanted to share some highlights of Mizuno forging.

 

Brief History:

1921: Mizuno begins golf product development project

1936: Mizuno introduces their first forged irons called the Tournament

(between 1936 aned 1980, Mizuno keep creating forged irons)

1980: Mizuno introduces the MS-1, MS-3, MS-5 irons

1982: Mizuno establishes golf sales division in the US and in the UK

1988: TN-87 Tommy Nakajima model released

1992: TN-91 model released

1994: MP-14, MP-29 irons introduced

2001: MP-33 introduced which is a creation by blending the knowledge of craftsman and CAD design

and so on

 

 

 

Mizuno forging is about "grain flow forging".

 

What grain flow forging does is to give you good feel. The way they produce good feel is the length of sound vibrating when struck.

As you can see (hear) grain flow forging makes vibration (sound) travel compared to cast and other forged irons.

Thus more feel.

 

You can see in the image below the grain flow forging in the grooves that also make the difference in how the golf club feels:

Were does the Mizuno plant in Hiroshima get their carbon steel billets from?

all 1025E pure select mild carbon steel that Mizuno uses come from Seiko.
Mizuno is the only company that forges irons from this type of carbon steel.
