What to get in a Newport 2 gamer?

Mil Spec, 303, SS, GSS
First things first, I'm not looking to start a massive collection of putters. Maybe just a small collection!

I have always resisted the call of getting an SC, always thinking that the hype associated with SC putters was just hot air from the marketing droids so I've always used other brands. When I say other brands, I mean that I've only ever owned 2 putters and they are both from the bargain bin end of the putter spectrum.

But as my bag got better and better, I began noticing that the only thing I wasn't happy with was the putter and that I should do something about it. So I decided to try out a wide range to see what I liked the best, specifically in the blade/plumbers neck type. So I went to the local shop that carries quite a large range: ping, taylormade, mizuno, odyssey, titleist and numerous others.

Well blow me down if the best one I found was a SC (see sig for details)! I was really quite prepared to dismiss it as over-priced tat for the ho end of the market (which was appallingly close minded of me I know) but nothing else came close in terms of performance, looks and feel.

So yes I have been bitten by the putter collection bug (but only to get ones I would put into play) and would like to get a Newport 2. I don't want one of the new ones as though the look is great, the insert is a turn off. A quick search around shows various types of Newport 2. Just the standard retail models (not the exotic Circle T/L's) seem to vary as regards to their stampings, finish and names, presumably due to being made in different years.

What should I look out for in the Newport 2 that would make it not just another Newport 2 and how do the following affect them: Mil Spec, 303, SS, SSS, GSS, Holiday Collection. I don't really care about having one that costs several hundred dollars or one with an exotic headcover, just getting a good one that hits the ball well.

330g with a 35 inch shaft is what I'm looking for, same as my Circa #3.

I think that this is one reason I'm confused here. Because I'm not looking for some exotic import there are almost too many options.

I just want to find out what sub-type of Newport is best, like is the Mil Spec better than the non-Mil Spec etc?

Thanks for the replies guys.

You are right that I wasn't looking for a high maintenance finish, just something standard. Thanks for the link Moecat, I knew that page existed but I didn't know you could search by the year of production.

So all things considered, if I was going to get a retail Newport 2 from the last 10 years, which do you think I should get and why?

Assuming you want one of the off the rack Newport 2's I would choose either the Pro Platinum Newport 2 or the Studio Stainless Newport 2. For a 35/330 both are obtainable for under $200 and then you could send it in to get restored with your paintfill of choice for an extra $110. You really can't go wrong with either putter.

You'd be surprised how high bids are running for brand new models that 502 mentions, so I second his opinion about acquiring something that has some wear and tear. And you do have options for high quality refinishing services beside Cameron Studio for less money. Unfortunately, I only know of places in the US, not the UK.

I thought the Scotty Cameron Studio cost of $110 was pretty high compared to some of the independent shops, but when you consider a reshaft, Cameron grip, and a new Cameron headcover are included in the price I don't think you can go wrong there. Of course if you want something exotic like a 3x black finish or some crazy stampings, you'll need to go somewhere other than the Camercon Studio.

You can't go wrong with either the Pro Platinum or Studio Stainless models of Newport putters. The Pro Plat is a little softer, whereas the SS is a little more durable. Try them both and see what you prefer. I went with SS because of I didn't want a high-maintenance finish and ProV1's & HX Tours etc are soft enough off the blade, even on the SS.

Good luck.

The Studio Stainless NP2 is about $80'ish on Ebay ATM. Well worth it - For the Tiger'ites it's a great buy is it's almost the same putter as his...

Want paintfill? Do it yerself or send it to me I'll do it for the price of a pint. ;)

Tiger's putter is has the Studio Stainless finish? I thought his Scotty headcover before his current Nike was the grey pro plat one?

If I had to choose, I'd probably go with the Pro Platinum Newport 2. I would guess that SSS and GSS models are bit pricey.

I've owned the Studio Stainless NP2 and a Mil-Spec. I've since sold both, but have always missed the Mil-Spec. My buddy has the Pro Plat Newport 2 and I'm always jealous when I see him putt with it.

Bloodredsun -

I'm curious as to what you thought of the Bettinardi Mizuno C-02/C-3 putters if you tried them. I also sampled putters recently and had to decide between the Circa 3 and Bettinardi C-03. I chose the C-03 and I'm glad I did. I've since bought a host of Newport 2's (Pro Plat and Studio Stainless) and a Circa 3 (all used eBay purchases) and they're all being sold. Again, the Circa 3 came the closest to taking out the Bett but the C-03 still wins.

FWIW - In a Cameron Studio Style (with the insert) v. Bettinardi/Mizuno C-series showdown, the Bett wins without much of a fight.

;)

I love my PP NPII Mid Slant. It sets up a little bit different, but it really fits my eye.

I have been using it for about 3 months now. Was averaging 39 putt with my 2 ball. Played 36 on Wed. and rolled 36 and 33 putts. Some of this could be mental, but I just feel more confident. (I have also been practicing putting more since getting the SC. Chicken or the egg... who cares, they both taste great with bacon) ;)

If you like the Anser styled putter, I would start with a Cameron 009 tour putter for the collection.

Driver:  TaylorMade 300 Mini 11.5° (10.2°), Fujikura Ventus Blue 5S Velocore

3W:  TaylorMade M4 15°, Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S

Hybrid:  TaylorMade Sim2 2 Iron Hybrid 17°, Mitsubishi Tensai AV Raw Blue 80 stiff

Irons:  Mizuno Pro 223 4-PW, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

GW / SW: Mizuno T-22, 52° (bent to 50°)/ 56° (bent to 54°), True Temper S400

LW:  Scratch Golf 1018 forged 58° DS, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

Putter:  Byron Morgan Epic Day custom, Salty MidPlus cork grip

Grips:  BestGrips Augusta Microperf leather slip on

Sorry for not replying but I have been away on a trip - 4 days at La Penina in Portugal.

Thanks for all the comments, it's made things a lot more obvious for me. I'm not going to get a tour issue or an insert so it looks like a straight fight between a PP or a Mil-Spec, depending on what's available out there.

PS - Paul, I'm still desperate to get a custom T.P.Mills softtail from you. Just as soon as I finish this **** thesis!

The later edition Newport 2..Studio Style version has a GSS insert (German Stainless Steel insert) attached to the precision milled Studio Stainless Steel body through a special vibration pad and the full inlay is surrounded by an elastomer cushion to produce a softer feel. This version comes in 350g, 340g and 330g (the one I have..)

Personally I love the way it feels! Recently I tested out a Circa 62 for about a couple of weeks and found myself coming back to my Newport 2 mainly because of the "feel"...to me it just feels better...

Of course everything is individual preference but in my opinion the Studio Style version is a gem!
