Pebble does want money, but no, you cannot show up as a single and get on no matter what time. Tuesday afternoon in April, yes, but many days during the summer the course is completely booked and as a single you would be wait listed.

Pebble does not discount tee times and almost never comps a round. Even if you were good friends with Clint Eastwood, you are paying. However, in all fairness to Clint, if you were his good friend he would be happy to host you for a round at Tehama.

Pebble doesn't even allow refunds. If you want to play Pebble you need a reservation at the hotel which requires payment upfront. If you later can't make it, Pebble gives you a credit for later use. Pebble will allow you to make a tee time without the hotel reservation the day before you want to play. That also requires a credit card and is not refundable.

From November - March, maybe even most of April-May you could call the day before and pretty much get a tee time for the next day. Maybe a foursome would have trouble, but one or two, no problem. In the summer, it would be hit/miss with Fri-Sun being the most packed. A lot of weekdays in the summer are packed too because $475 a round and $500+/night to stay there is no deterrent for a lot of corporate outings.

The best deal for the area is the Dukes card from Del Monte golf course. It allows you to play Spyglass and Spanish Bay for half price among other discounts. I played Spyglass a few weeks ago and it was $160. Not bad. Derek Lee was in the group behind us and at the turn was joking about hitting into us. I joked back, no problem hit all you want, we'll be on the green where we will be more than safe.

Play Spanish Bay twice for the same price as Pebble once. SB is still a huge challenge and great course for mere mortals. I tried to get my Dad and I onto Pebble even a week in advance and it was so booked that we went to SB instead. Paid $150/person (back in the 90s) vs Pebble at $300/person.

First off, as someone said you have a decent chance of getting off Pebble as a single on many days -- call ahead and talk to the pro shop.

Everything around Carmel will be expensive and as for playing the course, it is worth every penny. That's the main reason people are standing in line to play -- supply and demand.

If you choose not to play PB, Spyglass is certainly worth the time and effort to play...five holes by the ocean and then up into trees and hills that make it one of the hardest courses in the country.

The only thing worth doing at Spanish Bay is sitting on the patio with a drink and watching the sun go down. It is special but the golf is not.

If you're looking for other golf in the area, Bayonet is a great course at a much better price..in fact, I think Bayonet was recently voted as one of the harder tests in the country. The other thing worth considering -- especially if you're there for a while -- is to drive up the road a short bit and play Pasatiempo. Allister McKenzie (sp) designed and used to live on the course and in many ways, its set up like August and Cypress Point. Its also around $125-150 to play and there's a good bbq place on the drive up.

I don't mean to offend... so that means I probably will.

Sorry for those of you who would play SB twice vs. once at Pebble Beach. Pebble is truely a sacred place and should not be compared to 36 holes at Spanish Bay.

One thing I've learned from this discussion board is that money is no objetc for many.

For craps sake there are people spending $1000 on a driver shaft around here! Fork over Mr. Visa and tee it up at Pebble. The memories you'll take will last long after the Ozik is used to stake tomatoes!

When I'm old and wrinkled and on my death bed I'll always remember stuffing it to 4 feet on 17 at Pebble and making the birdie putt in the dark to keep me warm! I can still hear the ocean...

Life is about experiences not about acquiring things. You probably have 2 kidneys and you really only need one!

Excellent points. However, while SB is no PB, it is still a great test of golf; and you do get a lot more quirky bounces/leaves than you do at PB.

Even at $475, PB is still worth it at least once in a lifetime. Although I can see how every year more people are pushed out of the equation. Even at $300 many years ago, Pebble was never about value, it is the experience. Bandon Dunes is well on it's way to Pebble level, they are already at half the price and rising.

Bayonet/Black Horse have just about been ruined by their new owners. Two excellent courses are rising in price quickly. What was once a gem for $75 is now just okay at $150.

I guess that was my Point. Pebble is a once in a lifetime experience. I played it on my Honeymoon and I'm not sure I would ever want to play it again. not because it isn't worth it but because that was a very special experience.

You really can't compare it to other courses, because it's more then a round of golf. At least that's my experience!

$475 is alot of money. For me, thats 63.333 hours of work. But, if you told me today that you had a spot for 1 person and I could make it out there, I'd be more than willing to fork over the cash. To me it's one of those once in a lifetime things you have to do, along with playing St. Andrews, seeing the Grand Canyon, etc.

As Bobcat said, the memories you must take from one round there must be spectacular. I get the goosebumps just thinking of hitting an approach shot on hole 8, the tee shot on 7, the drive required for 9. I could go on for days just describing my thoughts of the tee shots, and I haven't even played there.

I will be playing Pebble Beach this summer with my dad and brother. I figure this is a once in a lifetime chance so I'd better do it now. Not only will it cost me $475 plus air, plus hotel - it will cost me a new kitchen table and chairs.

Pebble is an entirely different animal. At some point, every golf ho is going to have to cough up the 450 dollars to play it.

Like most people have already said, you simply cannot forget spyglass, spanish bay, or poppy.

If you're an ncga member, you can still play poppy for a reduced rate.

You really can't do much wrong in the Monterey Area.

Pebble is overrated IMHO.

There are better courses here on the Peninsula

So with that being said

 Come To Bayonet!

One word...Glowball!

LOL & amen to that. I've played some night ops golf at a few courses on the Monteray peninsula back during my college days. I won't name the courses, but that is truly the cheapest way to try them. You miss the scenery tho...
