I Think I've Done Something Bad...

HELP!

Just re-shafted my trusty V-Steel and think I've wrecked it but I'm not sure, please see the Following I'm going to put a fair bit information here so you get the full story...

Back Story

- Purchased Brand new in 2005, 15* stock M.A.S shaft

- Used for 3 years

- 2008 I got a biit older and stronger and wanted stiffer shaft, all my mates had UST V2's so I wanted one too...

- Bought pull .335 V2 shaft and as the bore was .350 took it to my local golf shop to be installed (brass shim was used)

- Used for many years absolute weapon

- 2013 Got a bit older and stronger again and decided I wanted X-Flex

this is where things start to deteriorate

- Bought pull Graphite Deisgn AD shaft off eBay

- as I had a few bad expiereinces with golf shops and was older and had all the tools I always do my own club repairs now and never had any problems

- tried to pull old V2 out of head and was an absolute disaster, due to the shim and other things it did not come out nicely destroyed the tip and ended up drilling the old shaft fragments and brass shim out

- Thought the bore was cleaned and prepared so installed new X-Flex AD shaft

- What piece of rubbish this club became

- became the laughing stock of my mates as I just couldn't hit it straight to save my life (I'm a 2 handcaper by the way)

- persevered as it is my trusty 3 wood

- June 2015 decide enough is enough

- Buy Diamana D+ pull .335 off eBay in S flex thought the softer flex was a better option

- remove AD shaft at local pro shop and come out very easily and my pro mentioned that it wasn't installed very far

- anyway I go home and start cleaning the hosel out and realise there is some brass in there ( I assume from the old V2 shaft and the shim)

- so I start digging around with a drill bit and to my amazement I pull the bit out and on the end of teh bit is a brass weight about 1/8" long which reveals a hole at the bottom of the hosel into the head of the club. Is this an integral part of the v-steel or did the golf shop guys put this there from when I had the V2 installed?

- Now there is a hole at the bottom of the hosel that goes into the head I poke a skewer in there to clean around a bit and on the end of the skewer comes out a sticky silicon like substance that seems to be occupying the space in the head bellow where the weight used to be. What is this?

- SO anyway tried to leave that silicon stuff there and clean the rest of the hosel which was a success.

- Installed new shaft with aluminium shim sleeve to make .350 and left overnight to dry

- Today now dry and ready for the grip I picked up up and dropped it from and about 2 inches to let the head hit the ground you know as you do to have a look at my new club at address.

- when it hit the ground I heard a terrible vibration / rattle that resembled that of an aluminium can being dropped. (please note there is no noise if you shake the head so its not something loose in the head)

so unsure if my new aluminium can 3 wood is a result of my crappy glueing job, not having a grip on so graphite shaft resonates or something worse I've done, can any one tell me:

HAVE I WRECKED MY V-STEEL?

Cheers

Ben

The v-steel heads are almost like a blind-bore install. They have an extended bore inside the hosel, where there is a tip weight(that brass weight you removed). Below that, there should be a bore plug that closes off the access into the hosel. Sounds like you either removed both, or knocked the plug into the head and removed the tip weight only. The sticky stuff inside the core of the head is probably rattle-stop, not uncommon, and is used to catch small fragments, debris, broken weld pieces, etc...and stop them from causing a rattle. No sure where the sound is coming from, but it could be that something got into the head, or it's an abnormal sound because the head is no longer sealed properly and the sound is resonating up into the shaft area.

In any event, I would tear down and start over. Clean everything out, make sure there is nothing loose in the head, seal it off properly, add another tip weight or use something like an old shaft tip to create the proper bore depth, and reinstall the shaft(using shims as necessary).

Golfrnut ... you are a legend. this is exactly the response i was hoping for. I don't really want to pull the new shaft and shaft again unless absolutely necessary so I think I'm going put the club in play... if its not working as it should or sound absolutely terrible then i'll pull it apart and start again :)

Put a grip on it and see if it sounds better. The ungripped shaft can give considerable vibration when dropped like that and the grip will stop it. If all is not well once gripped, then your only recourse is to do-over.

Sorry,
