Myrtle Beach Linuep - Opinions Wanted!

Recommended Posts

I'm heading to Myrtle Beach in early September and plan to play 3 rounds of golf. I was thinking of playing the Dunes Club and Caledonia for two. For the third, I was considering either one of the Barefoot Courses (likely Dye or Fazio) or Heather Glenn, which was recommended by a friend. Any thoughts? Any better courses for the price? Thanks.

Good choices. So far all the courses you listed are on my top list when we go out. We also toss in True Blue sometimes as it is pretty good.

Me personally I like DYE courses so enjoyed the Barefoot course, but I know the group I went with did NOT like it. They liked the Love - Fazio courses.

Though fairly far north of the courses you are listing, Tigers Eye and Leopard's Chase are both good courses to consider.

IF you are wiling to drive...Cape Fear is awesome (or to me it was)....but it is in Wilmington, about an hour or so north. http://www.capefearnational.com/

Thanks. After looking at locations, I may have to scrap Caledonia this trip - I am staying in North Myrtle so it looks like the drive to that course would be about an hour each way.

If in North Myrtle, I would do Dunes Club, Grand Dunes and Glen Dornoch (best 3 finishing holes in Myrtle).
Not a bad lineup right there. Dunes Club and Grande Dunes are absolutely 2 of my favorites. For your 3rd if you are looking to stay up in North Myrtle area I would consider Tidewater and Thistle as viable options. Thistle is great and is in good shape. Tidewater is a love/hate for me. It has some of the best golf holes and views that Myrtle offers but a lot of the course is just ho hum filler. As long as it is in good shape (as far as I know it is, they just put in new greens) it is a must play.

I highly recommend all 27 at Heather Glen, great course, pro shop, and price. Play there every year, sometimes, twice. The barefoot love was is great shape but I just didn't find it as enjoyable as expected.

How does Tidewater compare to Barefoot Dye/Fazio?
Barefoot Fazio is one of my favorite layouts in MB. The Dye is the most overrated course in Myrtle Beach in my opinion and has never been in good shape when I have played it.

Tidewater is better than the Dye club in my opinion but if both are in good shape I would much rather play the Barefoot Fazio course.

Barefoot fazio was in terrible shape last time y played it, about two months ago. Worst shape of any myrtle beach courses.

True blue was also in terrible shape.

Caledonia is over rated, tpc and tidewater are better. Near pawleys my favorite is heritage, specially the back nine.

True Blue is back to being in fantastic shape, just played there this week. Caledonia, TPC, and Pawleys are also all in great shape right now I have played them all this month. Beautiful tracks.

For the money I agree that you could say Caledonia is "overrated" but you get what you pay for. The course is always in pristine condition, the course is a great layout (17 holes...lol) but most would be more than happy with the experience they get even after paying a lot of money.

It is all opinion, you say Heritage is one of your favorites and I would whole heartedly disagree. I have never enjoyed a round there between the 5.5 hour rounds and the staff is more than unpleasant most of the time. Not a fan

Caledonia was the easiest course we played, we usually keep score since we bet on everything, and it was the easiest by far, pawleys plantation was the hardest.

It did not help we started on ten, the nine is a terrible hole to finish.

Also, the starter push us to play from the whites, after hitting hybrid wedge on the 12/13 (3&4 for us) we decided to move to the tips. We where 12 guys, all single digit in pretty good shape, but he insisted on us playing from the whites.

Course condition was excellent, and the 18th is a great hole. I think it was the only course all 12 of us broke 80.

I'd go with:
Dunes
Tidewater
Glen Dornach

Tidewater has a $59 pm special running through September 09 not sure if you're going that early in September. Also new miniverde greens. I personally don't think much of Grand Dunes but just my opinion.

For future reference you never have to play the tees that a starter or ranger "suggests" unless you are becoming a pace of play issue. It is unfortunate you were coerced into playing the short box on an already short golf course. I would have to hit 5 irons all day from the whites at Caledonia no wonder you felt it was easy and overrated. Play that from the tips and your tee shots become entirely different animals.

9 in the most disappointing hole in Myrtle, but I always suggest to people to ask to tee of #1.

Pawleys is the most difficult course in Myrtle Beach in my opinion. A fun round but man it eats my lunch. I have played out there many times and have played well only once. Your approach shots have to be great to keep your score down there.

I about sh*t when I saw Possum Trot ... It did make me laugh.

I played Heather Glenn but we only played 18 of the holes, not all 27. I recall it being decent, and we had a kill hot dog on the turn, but I don't recall it being something I wanted to go back to. Maybe I just remember it wrong. Tidewater was very good, but I did expect more from the hype it was getting.
