Callaway FT-i Tour LCG Driver mini review

Recommended Posts

3, 2, 1 and Boooom!!!
I had the opportunity to hit the upcoming new Callaway Tour LCG FT-i for the last week. The head is hot and the reduced spin is noticeable. I have a swing speed if 110 and I had no problem with the 9.5 head in a high kick shaft either. Great trajectory and flight. I thought I was going to have to kill the driver to keep the ball up in the air but found that wasn't he case. You could with some minor effort work the ball in both directions. I found the flight to be very neutral. It didn't have a tendency to move one way or another. I will get this head on the launch monitor to see what the number look like.

I have hit a lot of drivers over the years and this one is a good one.

Maybe is was the shaft. Oziks are a little boardy. The Diamana's tend to reduce spin and feel better.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you have that backwards.

Honestly, I hit one in our Callaway Performance Center and I dont feel its that great. I saw the spin fluctuate a little bit, about 200 rpms. The flight was alright. The ozik stock shaft felt good. Nice and smooth.

Nice stick, im sure they will sell. Ill stick to my FT-5 for now.

Totally agree, had the same experience at a Performance Center as well. Nothing special at all. Maybe a "real" Ozik but didn't feel like any I had tried in other heads. Not much difference in spin and way to high a trajectory even with the 8.5 dialed open. A good way for Callaway to make some more money and "deprive" the rip off artists at the other sites from their $1600 meals. It was however better than the i-Mix head that really felt odd independent of the shaft that was picked.

"Nothing special at all. Maybe a "real" Ozik but didn't feel like any I had tried in other heads."

This sentence, it can be read 2 different ways...

Are you saying that the shaft IS a real Ozik but doesn't feel good for some reason compared to hitting a different driver with it installed?

or

Are you saying that it's not a true Ozik, it's a "built for Callaway" version and that if a real one was installed, it would be as good as all the hype that's going around with Matrix?

Thanks.... and also looking for a LOT more first-hand opinions of this driver, as I'm looking to upgrade soon.

I really don't know if it is a real Ozik or built for Callaway version. Everyone claims it is the real shaft. I can only take their word for it and accept they are only charging $30 for it based on what they say. But it doesn't feel good in this head with whatever version of the this shaft it is (real or memorex). Way too whippy compared to other clubs I have had a known real Ozik in. Maybe it is real and maybe it isn't but the bottom line for me was it didn't perform, felt funny, and was poorly matched to this head. I had a similar club with a Diamana Blue Board in it that ran circles around this combination.. On the other hand that club cost $699 with the Diamana, so go figure.

Pardon my interjection here, but i am getting confused. i just spent 10 minutes listening with my head sideways in disbelief to my callaway rep tell me that the fti lcg will have LOWER launch. Now i will always listen to both sides of the argument but from what i can recall is that we have been bombarded with advertisements from other companies offering lcg HIGH launching heads. i believe that the rep is wrong but he is a rep. i just dont get how a lcg club can have low launch.

PLEASE end my confusion.

According to Cally the LCG will have a more penetrating flight and lower spin. I haven't hit it yet but a high launch with flatter flight and less spin should help with the high spin moon balls of the original. Also, the more penetrating flight should give better angle of descent for increased roll. I'm looking forward to trying this club.

No differences in the headcover. For me this club was great. I launched it at 15* with 2400 backspin on average. Those numbers are pretty good for me. As far as the shaft debate, there is no such thing as a "Matrix for Callaway". This info was obtained per a phone conversation with the folks at Matrix. But the skeptics out there might think they were lying to me.

I've tried it aswell, and sure it is a good driver. The Matrix Code 6 shaft is a bit to light and soft for my taste. But the data the club showed was ok. Sure it spins a little less than the tour one. But if you want a driver that really kills spin you should try the new Tour Burner. That driver just kills the spin. Had the opportunity to try it with a trackman and with the regular burner TP i had a launch of about 13 and 3000 rpm. And with the burner tour non TP version it was around 14 and 2000 rpm!!!

Nikey Mikey: The UK should have them available since sweden got them and everything gets shipped from the UK to here so...
