Skips Sticks - My WITB carousel.....More photos....MacGregor/Miura/TM, Radius Putters

Recommended Posts

I own a lot of golf clubs.

Maybe not "a lot" by Golfwrx standards but enough for family/friends who know how many I own to think I'm abit mental.....even my golf obsessed friends think I'm nuts, though that's partly down to my obsession with blades and them thinking I'm making the game too hard for myself, I tend to disagree on that front.

I often take photos of said kit but I'm not sure my social media accounts could cope with them all, so I thought I would start posting some here so they don't just sit on my phone and laptop and waste space and hey, maybe someone will even be interested by them?!

Most of the kit I own is slightly retro 80's/90's/00's that I've picked up cheaply on eBay and tweaked to my specs. I tend to pick up clubs I loved as a kid but couldn't get my hands on, lots of MacGregor/Hogan/Titleist/Cleveland/Mizuno. It's mainly fairly traditional stuff but nearly all very playable, I prefer to touch/feel/hit clubs than just look at them, though they do look pretty ace. With this in mind I rotate most of my clubs quite often.

So the plan here is to take a few snaps when I get out and about with a different set and post them.....hopefully lots of photos and not too much chat from me after this intro.

So onto set one played over the weekend;

Bridgestone J715 B3 - 9.5 Degree - XCaliber T6+ (Tour Stiff)

Tour Edge Exotics E8 Tour - 14/15.5 Degree - XCaliber TFW (Tour Stiff)

Srixon Z U45 3 iron - True Temper Tour Concept S3 (Hard Stepped)

Ping Eye 2 4 iron - ZZ Lite

Cobra Greg Norman Signature Blades 5-PW - X100 (Soft Stepped)

Cleveland BeNi Designed by Byron Nelson 52/56/60 Wedges (52-X100 56/60-S300)

Titleist Scotty Cameron Oil Can - Newport

I was also carrying an extra wedge for abit of fun/testing;

Those Norman blades are not for the faint of heart... I still carry a vintage Ping L8+ or a Ping Mantis bag from the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I have a 2015 Sun Mountain 3.5 but there’s something about the aesthetics and the construction of the old Ping bags.

I love golf

The bag...in the rain.

I reckon this is the best golf bag ever made, looks great, feels great and is pretty much indestructible.

Beryllium and nickel!? Ping bags rock: all I've carried/pushed for 30 years. Love that you're gaming tools, not objets d'art

The Cleveland Beryllium Nickel wedges are superb, soft yet crisp and very durable. The head shapes are also great on the SW and LW, the 52 'DW' ('Dual' wedge?!) has s slightly more rounded leading edge than I'd ideally like (think old school cleveland 588 shape) but still good.

I agree about the tools, I find I prefer the aesthetics of a simple older blades that were designed to work and have that more rugged machined looked, nothing overally fussy about stamps or bright colours. Despite these I personally think most of the clubs I owned are pretty darn beautiful!

Cheers.

I absolutely love the XCaliber Shafts, unfortunately the last I heard was that the company was on a hiatus as such due to Robin Arthur's health thus they were/are hard to come by. Obviously his health comes first and I hope he is well! It's a really pity too as the shafts are fantastic for a fraction of the price of the 'high end' shafts.

I grew up playing Grafalloy Prolites so I like a stiff tip/low launch/boring flight and that familiar crack of the shaft rather than a smoother softer feel and that's what the XCalibers deliver. Incredibly stable and also a bonus for me is the 'TS' tour stiff flex. I am usually right in-between a stiff and an X stiff on most shafts but XCaliber have a 'Tour Stiff' as their stiffest flex, given the extremely stiff tip, they can have a slightly softer butt and mid section to add feel and make them more playable at slightly lower speeds without being overcome at higher swing speeds. I feel like I can take a smooth swing and make the shaft work or swing as hard as possible and never overcome it. Highly recommended!

I will say whats NOT to like? Right up my alley all the way!!

Lead tape yep

Cleveland wedges with lead tape yep

V-Foil wedge with toe emblem missing yep

any blade yep

Ping 4 iron well the jury is out on that but a redeemable quality lead tape equipped (just kidding)

Old school Ping bag cool my version is an old school Titleist stand just as cool

beat to hell non covered Scotty yep.

Yep like you I will play anything at any time and carry a roll of lead tape in my bag as SOP. Sometimes my biggest decision is not where I am playing but what clubs or combination of clubs I am playing. See my signature that is a sample of what I play. You ought to come over to the Classic Golf and Golfers Forum here on WRX you will find a plethora of like minded folks over there and good folks too!! You will fit in fine there. Me I am a Macgregor man by heart but lately thanks to some folks over there I have became a sorta Hogan man too. Show you how quirky I am in the last few weeks I have been playing a set of 54 Hogan Precisions. My running partner Bear found a set of beat to hell and back Mizuno MP-68s in a pawn shop for $35. Guess whose bag they are in now? Yep mine complete with lead tape

BIG STU, I find myself over in the classic golf forum every now and then but try and refrain from heading too far down the rabbit hole!! I was actually a Hogan guy as a kid, big fan of Apex 99's but have more recently found myself lusting after MacGregor kit.

Anyway, to keep this moving abit I filled my bag with an almost completely different set this last weekend...
