Need Help Identifying a Course San Diego area

My buddies and I have been doing a trip/tournament since the 90's, I am putting together a list of the courses we have played, we have a great record starting in 99 with all scores, courses, etc. There is one course however we played in San Diego in the mid 1990's that I just cant seem to identify. We were staying near San Diego State area, one of the guys was going to school there and had an apartment we all crashed at because his roomates had left. I kind of remember having to drive 20-30 minutes to this course. It was not on the water, it was not near downtown. It was more in the hills, canyons area.

This was 1997, so course had to be open then. It was Public, probably would not of been too expensive given our budget back then. One "characteristic" I remember clearly because it was one of the craziest shots of my life, is there was an uphill almost blind shot I think to the green, assume it was a Par 4. Behind the green was a huge wooden pole, like a utility pole used for power lines, it was pretty think, I seem to recall it being something to do with either letting group know green was cleared or maybe a target but it sat probably 15 yards beyond the green, I must have mis-clubbed by shot because I hit this thing square and the ball caromed back onto the green. Inches right or left Im in the ravine.

18 Might of had some large boulders near the green as I can kind of recall some of our first finishing groups sitting on them as we came up.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Steele Canyon or Mt. Woodson?

Thanks for suggestions I will check out Mt Woodson and see if pics on site jar something - for sure not Steele Canyon, we played there in 2017

I was going to say steele as well. Mt woodson is a good guess but it's probably more than 30 minutes from SDSU as you have to go over into Ramona and back then it might have even been longer since I'm not sure if you could directly take the 8 to the 67 like you can now

Thanks, - the drive time and direction was just a hunch, I know it was not along the coast. I dont remember a whole lot other than the unique pole behind the green that I hit that had my ball not hit that, it would of gone into ravine area. Are there any courses that closed? Woodson sort of looks familiar in characteristics, but 18 looks different (anyone know if it was re-routed ever?)

Could it be Salt Creek?

No, looks like Salt Creek opened in 2001 and this round took place in 1997

I think I found it - Meadow Lake Country Club in Escondido, looks like it closed a few years back and reopened under a different name but some of the pics from Meadow Lake appear to be the course.

We stayed near SDSU but drove some to get to that course, I think I figured it out, Meadow Lake Country Club.

I know you said you think you figured it out but also consider Boulder Oaks. It has an uphilll par 4 similar to your description. It has lots of canyons but is in Escondido a bit north. Pretty cheap too. I don't know how long it's been there though. Could find out with a quick google search.

Thanks - yes that is the same course, or at least some of the same course. Meadow Lake Country Club closed and was reopened as Boulder Oaks.

You would remember Mt. Woodson, you go on this huge wooden cart path that feels like a roller coaster. I believe after 1st or second hole.
