DIY locking golf cargo box for Jeep Wrangler JK/2-door

Recommended Posts

check it out... I made a 15 cubic foot golf locker (holds shoes, bag, push cart, umbrellas, alignment sticks, balls, drinks, and 3 cu ft of additional storage boxes) for the back of my 2012, 2-door, Jeep Wrangler Sport JK. The lack of a commercially-available lockable storage solution for the cargo bay (after removing backseat) of a 2-door Wrangler that was compatible with both soft and hard top, and features a hard deck for storage of additional items on top (coolers, camping gear, etc.) drove me to execute this DIY project. Below are some pics. Materials were < $100 (wood, carpet, glue, marine grade gasket, screws, piano hinge, hooks). Took a 3-day weekend for design, cardboard mock-up and templates, buy supplies, fabricate, assemble, seal, paint, carpet (with a few rounds and speed bump jumps for testing purposes). The feature I'm most proud of is that the hinging portion of the deck fits into the groove in the Jeep tailgate making it super secure. #4x4GolfCart #tooLEGITtoQUIT

A thief would have to be well prepared... tell 'em they're gonna need one or more of the following: a crowbar, a battery powered saw, a mallet, lock pick kit, or some C-4 ... the storage box is shaped like a wedge in the front so it's secured by the back of the front seats, and the top wedges into the Jeep tailgate. The fit is tight as he!!, aided by some leveling feet on the bottom of the box and some marine-grade gasketing I adhered to the gate (mostly to keep moisture out). For added measure the box is lashed to the welded hooks that serve as attach points for the stock backseat.

Carpet matches the stock black carpet so it kinda blends in, at least for casual observers who don't get too nosy. Now I worry less about prying eyes/hands while I'm away and the Jeep is topless. Works great for grocery runs too. It's so good I might list it on Airbnb.

Throw a mattress on there and you all set for camping out for a tee time.

If you check some of the Jeep overlanding sites or facebooks or pinterest there are some good ideas. I wouldn't think a set of glides to make a drawer type thing so it all pulls out for easier access would be a bad thing to see about.

@smashdn I decided to go with a DIY solution after studying overlanding and Jeep enthusiast sites... glide rails are expensive, and honestly aren't needed for what I've got going on here. Hinging box lid provides plenty of access. But turns out hinging lid is unnecessary if you have long arms. I also found that none of the box kits (which go for hundreds up to thousands of $s, like those from ARB) come close to 15 cu ft of storage.
Also, box is contoured from back to front for extra storage and added security... it physically can't slide out ... has to be lifted out to get past rear roll bar mounts.

Yeah, I have never looked into the kits. I have an XJ and have checked out just the glides. My father-in-law is a furniture/cabinet maker so I could get the glides through him if I wanted. I rarely ride with my back seat folded down anymore. We've done some camping trips out of it but just stacked rubbermaid storage containers and been happy. You can drag those out and keep outside the vehicle at night and not worry with dew or rain. I do know from experience that squirrels can chew a hole in them in less than four hours though.

At any rate your storage set up looks good.

@aERonAUtical96 before I built this box, I'd flip down the back of the rear seat, lay a towel down and hoist my push cart, stand bag, and shoes onto the rear seat. That was sufficient with either the soft top up, or hard top on. Might be worth trying if you have nothing in the rear seat. I really like the 2 door JK over the 4 door, no regrets!!
