Tip Trim Catalyst 6.0 80 CW shaft?

So, I have a Catalyst 6.0 80 CW 7 iron pull that I want to use for a 52 wedge. I don’t have a need for this shaft and has been sitting in my stock pile of pulls. I’m thinking about putting it I’m my 52* Vega wedge. This is a taper tip pull that was pulled from a 7 iron.

Is it ok if I tip this 1.5”, then sand down to get in a wedge? I know instructions are to but trim this shaft only, but I’m afraid if I do that, this will play really soft since it’s basically soft stepped 3 times. Again, instructions sat you shouldn’t tip trim this, but I’ve been told in the past most graphite taper tip shafts are basically tipped parallel shaft that’s been sanded down. I’ve purchased 4 iron taper tip pulls and just tip trim the appropriate amount to the corresponding iron in the past.

Generally it's not recommended to tip trim any taper tip shaft.

Physically it may be possible IF the shaft stays parallel for a long enough above the original hosel. You'll have to check that with calipers. If the diameter starts to increase quickly, then I wouldn't risk it because it probably also means the wall thickness is decreasing.

However, graphite shafts usually have a reinforced tip section (thicker walls) to help handle the stresses at the top of the hosel. The length of that can vary but it is possible that you end up trimming away that reinforce section and end up with a higher risk of breakage. Or it may work out find. Unfortunately the only way to know for sure is to take the risk and give it a try.

What do you think about using this 7 irons shaft straight into a 52* wedge head and but trimming to length? The 6.0 is a stiff and I normally pay regular. Will it play too soft?

I think it will play soft stepped 3-4 times depending on the head weight. That's roughly equivalent to a full flex or even more.

Now what that means in terms of feel and performance for you, I couldn't say. Do you have that shaft model installed in any other of your clubs? If so you can test it out before cutting. Just add 21 gm of lead tape to the head and go test it out choking up 1-1/2".
