Guys, they are absolutely great. I have owned Nike forged blade, Titleist 690s, 695mb and played the CBs. I have hit Mizuno mp- everything and none of these compare. Not that harsh with a miss hit and very workable, especially since it is a very short blade. When I strike the ball properly even with the projext x 7.0s, it feels like I missed the ball completely, only to see the ball take off like a rocket. Long are are easier than most sets imho.

  • 1 year later...

Callaway Demo Day was at a local store. I went and hit some clubs (they didn't have X Prototype at this event so I couldn't hit them). The Callaway rep and I talked, and we settled on X-22 Tour. I bought from Callaway preowned dot com (they have a 15 day money back guarantee). So, I switched from my Mizuno MP62 (sold them on ebay quick) to Callaway. X-22 Tours are good. I had several good rounds with them, but I missed my blades and it always crept in my head "...I'm hitting cavity back irons."

So, I started reading and decided to buy a brand new set (plastic still on the club head) of Tour Authentic X Prototypes. I got them just to my specifications, BUT did not have Callaway adjust the lie or loft. Instead, when I got them I took them to my local trusted golf smith (read like black smith...). He's got a very trusty Mitchell Golf Machine... I wanted the lofts checked - three were off (WOW!!!) And I have my lie adjusted ½º up - yeah, ½ of 1º. This was before I hit a single ball - plastic still on...

Ok, I went out and hit 'em. Good... nice... glad I'm playing blades... Then I went out and played a round. Better... very nice... glad I'm playing blades. I've played two times with them thus far and can honestly say these are the best irons I've owned - feel, stability, workability (blade), etc. Just a superb club.

I've heard a lot of good things about this club, but I am curious as to why so many more Callaway staff pros play the '09 X-Forged instead of the X-Prototype?

Is it really so much more? I didn´t count, but I see a lot of guys on the tours with the Protos.

Just looking at the Callaway homepage it looks like this:

X22: Mediate
X22-Tour: Thompson
X-Forged 09: Beckman, Henry, Jacobson
Prototype: Appleby, Els, Begay, Browne, Mickelson

That´s for the official listed players on the PGA Tour, 5 for the Protos, 3 X-Forged

Including the European, Nationwide, and LPGA tours Callaway has at least 16 players playing the '09 X-Forged irons.

I'm not sure if he has changed his bag around recently, but when I was at the Masters last year for a practice round, Mickelson was using the '07 X-Forged in his long irons and the X Protos in the short irons. I'm not sure exactly where the split was, but I saw at least the 3, 4 and 5 in the X-Forged.[/quote]
He now has the '09 X-Forged in his bag for the longer irons, and the X-Prototypes for the rest.
