...is that a Pac 10 Conference rule? (to sit out a year)

There are many examples of golfers being immediately eligible to play the following season ...IIRC Mahan is an example after he transferred from USC to Okie State ...another is the cat (name escapes me) who recently transferred from Georgia to Augusta State?

Transferred to ASU. Has to sit out this year due to transfer.

It was covered a bunch in the media during the week of the FBR when he monday qualified.

Thanks.

I never understood the UCLA thing. ASU just seemed like a better fit. Playing golf in West L.A. can't quite compare to playing in the PHX area.

bk4 is correct. When an athlete wants to transfer, the coach of the school he wants to transfer to will ask for a release from the other school and if the other school signs the release then he doesn't have to sit out a year but if the coach doesn't release the player then they have to sit out. I knew of two kids who transfered in the past two years, one was a started and was not released by his coach and the other never played in a tournament and so the coach released him.

I went from DI to DIII and had to sit out a year, to further add to the list of technicalities...

I got to disagree on this. Sure there are great course around ASU but UCLA has some really choice venues too, granted you will sit in traffic for 40min trying to get there...

Academically you really can't compare the two schools as UCLA on the whole has a much strong reputation. (Disclaimer, I went to UCLA)

That's weird. I had never heard of that. That's usually why football players transfer to lower divisions schools, so they can avoid sitting out a year. I almost transfered to a DIII school, and would have hated to sit out a year when I wouldn't even compete against my old team. I took a class on the NCAA in college, and it seems like half the rules were made up as they went along.

They're one of the most bush-league corrupt organizations on the planet. I had an eligibility issue at the DI level, which prompted my transfer down to the DIII level so I could actually gain some eligibility back (I spent some semesters in college part time, and DIII only counts full-time semesters towards your eligibility). I was DEFINITELY a rare case though...
